Illinois, New Jersey, and New York Are Top States For Outbound Moves in 2017

This surprises…No one.

In all of these states taxes are high, the red tape is thick, and the weather is sub par to bad.

I have a friend who once vacationed at a Delaware Beach, just south of New Jersey, who having lived out West was taken aback by the Philly/New Jersey culture on display. Let’s just say, and I say this as one who has the last name Sorrentino, I have ancestral ties to the Northeast, that the “Guido” factor was very high. The friend told us of sitting at the beach (they usually went to North Carolina or South Carolina for their beach vacation) and listening to the large and loud family next to them harangue each other all day.

The phrase that pretty much summed up the day for my friend was uttered by the frazzled patriarch of the clan to his son. “Look, your mom is bi-polah…She’s bi-polah…” At full volume.

Now there is nothing wrong with loud families. Ahem. And there is nothing to be ashamed of if one is indeed bipolar (a condition that can be treated effectively by the way), but that this bit of info was hung out there like that. Well, it’s just a different world. And I could see why some would want to leave it. (And I suppose why others might love it.)

My friend will be going back to the Outer Banks next time.

Of course this is one isolated incident but I understand what my friend was saying, having spent quite a lot of time in the Northeast myself. The country is vast. There are lots of places to live that are less crowded, less regulated, and less stressful.

As they say, New Jerseyites are “born to run” I guess.

Fun Fact: New Jersey has the largest rodeo east of the Mississippi. No kidding.

Illinois, New Jersey, and New York were the top states in the nation for outbound moves in 2017, according to data from United Van Lines.

United Van Lines, which tracks state-to-state migration patterns, found that Illinois was the top state for outbound migration with 63 percent of moves going out of state.

“The Northeast continues to experience a moving deficit with New Jersey (63 percent outbound), New York (61 percent) and Connecticut (57 percent) making the list of top outbound states for the third consecutive year,” the report states. “Massachusetts (56 percent) also joined the top outbound list this year.”
