Feds Want Input On Marijuana Reclassification

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

It certainly shouldn’t be Schedule 1 that is for absolute sure. Pot has lots of medical benefits and, though a drug with risks that include psychological dependence, it is relatively (for a drug) safe. (But it can really weird out some people with anxiety issues I think it’s fair to say.)

But don’t overdo it. Be an adult about things if you choose to partake. Children have no business with it (except for perhaps medical reasons). And for the sake of everyone else it is reasonable to expect cannabis users to be discreet. I’m very much for legalization but it’s just bad form to light up a spliff on a crowded beach. That isn’t OK.

Let’s get cannabis reclassified and moved into the realm of sensible law.

(From Forbes)

Currently, under both U.S. law and global agreements, marijuana sits in the most restrictive category of Schedule I. Domestically, that means it is not available for formal prescriptions and research on its effects is heavily restricted. Globally, it means that nations signed onto drug treaties are not supposed to legalize cannabis.

But now, the United Nations World Health Organization is set to launch a review of the current international classification of marijuana, THC, cannabidiol and other related compounds and preparations, and it wants input from member nations. In turn, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is asking “interested persons” to submit comments that can inform the country’s position on the issue before it weighs in with the UN.

Specifically, FDA is inviting input on the “abuse potential, actual abuse, medical usefulness, trafficking and impact of scheduling changes on availability for medical use of” cannabis and its compounds, the agency wrote in a Federal Register notice scheduled to be published on Monday.

I think it should be legal, but nobody should ever think it is completely without side effects.
Although it is said to not have withdrawal symptoms, I disagree.
I know that if I smoke it regularly and abruptly stop, I go through a couple of weeks of some strange things, mostly things like falling asleep and going right into REM sleep and within an hour waking up from a very intense dream with my heart racing and sweats, out of sorts kinds of feeling while awake, rapid heart rate and blood pressure increase.
I tend to be very sensitive to drugs and suffer side effects from nearly every drug I have ever taken, script or not.
The withdrawals I experience from it are not nearly as bad as harder drugs like tobacco and alcohol, and seem to be relatively short lived.
No doubt it should be treated as a potent drug and heavily regulated.
But putting people in prison for it is just plain nuts.
