And yet I can drive down to Lowes and buy a fleet of them if I wanted. How can this be? Why is there no lawnmower control? The humanity! The carnage!

What’s sad is than in some parts of Europe they probably actually have “lawnmower control”. London has “knife control” now.

Just to be clear we are not making light of death or injury, just pointing out how certain things are perceived as risks when others aren’t.

Having used big lawnmowers over the years I will say that one must keep in mind that lawnmowers are serious equipment. They are powerful tools. And, as we see, they can kill you if you aren’t paying attention. But that doesn’t mean we need to start a panic or start drafting laws.

This weekend’s death of an Alabama man highlights the dangers that come with operating a riding lawnmower.

Lawnmower injuries sent more than 80,000 people – including 5,000 children – to U.S. emergency rooms in 2015, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Lawnmowers are especially dangerous for children, cited by the Amputee Coalition as the number one reason for pediatric amputations nationwide.

According to the commission, 800 children are run over by riding mowers or small tractors each year, and more than 600 of those incidents resulted in amputation.
