Save Us from the Gov—Fed, State & Local

An extensive recall of blueberries from Illinois to Maine and parts of Canada illustrates what may be a needless concern by the public and a serious cost for Dole, and an abuse of power by the FDA, says Richard Ruhling, a retired MD, MPH who taught Health Science at Loma Linda University.

Ruhling says he studied the parasite in question (Cyclospora) for board exams 50 years ago, but like so many rare conditions in the textbook, he never saw a case, and he wonders why the gov can’t leave some things to the public, like washing their berries before eating them?

Another example is a recall of 380,498 vehicles due to rear suspension that may not be tightened properly. But this is a lot of trouble because of “two crashes” in the last 10 years. We would do far better to recall the alcohol, tobacco and drugs—they all have a list of adverse events far more risky that 2 in 380,498.

Do we really need the FDA to tell us everything we can or can’t do while they ok alcohol, tobacco and drugs if dispensed under a license? Isn’t it about money and control by ever-increasing gov regulations?

Fruits and veggies are safer than animal products that are more monitored by local health departments.
