A CSA is Community Supported Agriculture, wherein a farmer or gardener offers a certain number of “shares” to the public. Typically, the share consists of a box of vegetables, fruits, or herbs. By purchasing a share, which is like a subscription, you pay a fee and are given a box of seasonal produce each week during the farming season.

The great thing about CSA’s is …

1. You are supporting your local farmer.
2. The food is locally grown. The food is not truck ripened (picked early, then ripened in the truck while it’s on it’s way to the grocery store, 8 states away.)
3. You’re not contributing to gas costs of trucking food from a distant place.
4. You get fresh food, with natural vitamins and minerals.
5. You usually get to the visit the farm and see how the food is grown. (No. It’s not grown at Wal-mart.)

2. Shop at a produce stand
Produce stands have great deals on fruits, vegetables, and herbs. You’ll save a lot of money by visiting your local produce stand. You’ll be astonished at the amount of food that is thrown into dumpsters, especially in the dumpsters of produce markets and grocery stores. I’ve even entered compactors before. You’ll find a lot of food, save a lot of money, and have a lot of fun. Bury the rotten food in the yard and see what comes up.

5. Eliminate junk food
Stop eating junk food, all those bags of chips, cookies, and snacks that arrive in aluminum bags and sit there for years on the shelves. Eliminate candy and sugar from your diet. It’s wreaks havoc on your health and promotes rapid aging. Eliminate nutritional pornography.

Out of these options, I have done numbers 2, 3, 4, 5.

Gardening was a bit tricky and can get expensive. There’s so many factors involved, too. I think it’s cheaper just to buy your food from a produce stand.

Dumpster diving is a terrific way to save money on your grocery bill. It’s free, it’s fun, and you’re likely to find plenty of food.

I’ve dumpster dived and found lots of food, enough to fill an entire truck bed on more than one occasion. Often, I’ll find so much food that I’ll offer it to family, friends, neighbors.

Eliminating junk food has saved me money and it benefits my health, too. It’s a great feeling not to have to be addicted to nutritional pornography that promises so much yet delivers so little. If you are addicted to junk food, begin eating lots of raw fruits and raw vegetables, and raw, unsalted seeds and nuts. Begin drinking water with fresh squeezed lemon. In doing this, you will be training your body to enjoy foods that are good for you, and you’ll eventually start to crave healthy foods as a result.
