Get a Dog; Then, Get Gold

Clearly, French actor Jean Dujardin understood that lesson when he kissed his canine co-start Uggie at the Academy Awards ceremony after The Artist won best picture.  In The Artist,  Dujardin portrayed George Valentin, a silent-film superstar who has seen better days.  Uggie had been shamelessly promoted by the Weinstein machine as part of the promotion for the Oscars.

In the aftermath of the Oscar, Uggie broadened his franchise and is engaged in an bark-all memoir to be published this fall.   Now, the Jack Russell terrier is being promoted in adds for PETA: “I’m Uggie, and I was ADOPTED.”

Two owners abandoned Uggie before he was adopted by trainer Omar von Muller, who noted that Uggie “was very smart and very willing to work. One of the most important thing[s] is that he was not afraid of things. That is what makes or breaks a dog in the movies, whether they are afraid of lights, and noises and being on sets. He gets rewards, like sausages, to encourage him to perform, but that is only a part of it. He works hard.”

Rescue dogs are the only things that need to be adopted these days as the global economy has gone to the dogs.   So much money these days is being wasted on supposed purebred hedges like precious metals and art.   It is time to restore gold to its rightful place at the center of the monetary kingdom.

As Lewis E. Lehrman writes in the introduction to Money and the Coming World Order: “…gold convertibility of the dollar will lead to a vast outpouring of worldwide savings from inflation hedges such as commodities, farmland, art, antiques—almost everything perceived to be a better store of value than depreciating paper currencies.  Convertibility triggers the global release of speculative trillions hoarded in these unproductive inflation hedges.  Stable money also creates incentives to save from income.  Combined with a new level of savings from income, hoarded funds would pour into real productive facilities.  The new investment would give rise to a general economic expansion—through new business, new products, new plant and equipment, creating thereby renewed demands for labor to work the expanding economy.”

The gold standard – it needs to be adopted.   We know it can be done.   After all, the classical gold standard has worked hard and well in the past.
