More than one-third of U.S. adults are obese
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention released this report last week that included data through 2011 on the subject of obesity in the U.S. The results were rather grim, if unsurprising, as indicated in the title above and the graphic below, a stunning 36 percent – a whopping 78 million! – of all adults now considered to be obese.
There’s lots of interesting data in the report, including many breakdowns by age/sex (men are fatter than women until age 60, but, after that, women really make up that lost ground) and socioeconomic status (most obese adults are not low income).
Of course, the cultural factors involved are best shown on maps like the one above and the list of top ten fattest states was extracted from the data, now shown below.
There are three new entrants to the 30+ percent crowd, presumably located at the bottom of the table and a very fun time-lapse obesity map can be found at the bottom of the CDC page for the study.
It’s pretty amazing that this subject doesn’t get more attention. If you extrapolate the trend of the last 20 years or so into the future (i.e., obesity rates about tripling since 1988), I can’t imagine what we ‘Mericans will look like at around 2030.
