What Is The Best Place To Live In America? Pros And Cons For All 50 States

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

If you could live in any state in America, where would you go?  During troubled times like these, what is the best place in the United States to live?  A lot of people are asking these kinds of questions these days.  Our economy is on the verge of collapse, natural disasters are becoming more frequent and more intense, the U.S. population is becoming angrier and more frustrated by the day, our government has become incredibly oppressive and controlling, war could break out at any time and evidence that society is breaking down is all around us.  As our world becomes increasingly unstable, many families are considering moving somewhere else.  But what areas are best and what areas should be avoided?  Is there really a “best place to live” in America?  Well, the truth is that each family is facing a different set of circumstances.  If you have a great support system where you live, it can be really tough to pick up and move 3000 miles away from that support system.  If you have a great job where you live now, it can be really tough to move some place where there may be no job at all for you.  But without a doubt there are some areas of the country that will be far better off than others in the event of a major economic collapse.  This article will take a look at each of the 50 U.S. states and will list some of the pros and cons for moving to each one.

Not all of the factors listed below will be important to you, and a few have even been thrown in for humor.  But if you are thinking of moving in the near future hopefully this list will give you some food for thought.

A few years ago when my wife and I were living near Washington D.C. we knew that we wanted a change and we went through this kind of a process.  We literally evaluated areas from coast to coast.  In the end, we found a place that is absolutely perfect for us.  But different things are important to different people.

And if I gave your particular state a low rating, please don’t think that I am trashing the entire state or all of the people who live there.

For example, there are some absolutely wonderful people that live in the state of California, and there are some areas of California that I would not mind visiting at all.  But for the times that are coming I am convinced that it is going to be a really bad place to live.

Not that I have all the answers either.  Hopefully this article can get some debates started, and hopefully those debates will help people that are thinking of moving to another state to be more informed.

Idaho is the only “A” huh? On my way LOL. Thanks for the info!

Idaho is ok as long as your a white supremacist. The northern Idaho area is loaded with neo nazi/skinheads (or as my kids call them.. 1 eared snowbunnies). My sis lived there for a couple of years. NOT IMPRESSED.

        • HDThoreau

As long as the Neo-NAZI’s aren’t leeching off of the government like blacks, I don’t care. They aren’t stealing from me.

        • nona

Oh really? That sux. Thanks for the heads up. I’m just gonna go live in the wilderness somewhere. Maybe live in a cave. LOL I’m joking of course. On the other hand though, kinda sounds inviting!

Herein lies the problem. This was supposed to be a nation under God. Since all the division, people have just steered more towards worshiping the state, rather than God.

In the not so distant future, there will be nothing but high tech city states, with a complete elimination of the middle class (there already is really, but people are still in the fantasy world). All the poor will be slaves in the city, living in boxes, under strict surveillance, etc. While the elite will have their well protected estates in the countryside. You won’t even be able to drive to get near them.

You’re already under feudalism in America and have been for a long time really.

    • patricks-bushcraft

I just noticed Oregon has high taxes as a con, ha ha

You should do an article on the best ‘planet’ to live on. It could be summed up pretty easily, anyone but this one!

The Louisville and Lexington Metros in Kentucky are the last places I would be in a SHTF situation. They are infested with gangs that will be loyal to the establishment who empower them to commit violence on behalf of the DHS agenda. The rural central and eastern Kentucky areas are actually well suited for survival. Of course you are right about the lack of jobs, that is a real obstacle here, I will admit that. But it has been said by scientists back in 2004 that Berea Kentucky is one of the statistically best places to survive an Armageddon event or breakdown in financial/social order. That study was carried out using around 224 criteria.

Eastern Kentucky and West Virginia are nearly identical. We have great open carry/concealed carry laws. We have hospitality and authenticity. We aren’t as xenophobic as the mainstream media would have people abroad believing. We have farmers and carpenters and vets who are very much used to walking day and night through these hills.

There are several locations nationwide to consider. Good ones. The truth is, the problem areas like KY, TN, an AL will garner extra attention. Only time will tell.

FOUR MORE years of OBAMA and you can lower the rating to F- in every state,NO JOBS,lots of CHINESE and RUSSIANS running everything and MOST if not all americans will be in prison CAMPS being excuted for stupid in a no stupid zone………………

    • MandyC

Actuallly, I live in Maine, and I am very disgusted with the way things are going here.. Everything is expensive and good jobs with decent pay are very very scarce. The crime rate in certain places is getting worse by the month. Domestic violence and drug dependence are HUGE problems. You’d swear half the population is on pharmaceutical psychotropic drugs.

It’s very socialist and the ridiculous laws are getting worse each year. People do not trust each other so much anymore unless they are at a party and high. People are too stressed and struggling to stop and enjoy people. I’m talking about the basic working class.

IT is not so cheap to live here considering minimum wage. Two family wage earners with out children in the house are struggling to pay their mortgages. I could go on, but it is too depressing!!

    • Monticello

Whoever wrote this was from Idaho. Colorado’s 1 of 2 pros is the Springs? Good grief, you have to know a state before you can rate it.

    • Monticello

Who can take this list seriously when stupid things like professional ball teams are listed as pros or cons.

    • Anonymous

You have OBVIOUSLY never lived in the south. I lived there for 30 + years, and “southern hospitality” died out in the 80′s. Now it is mostly meth heads, RAMPANT gang violence in even remotely large cities; with lots of heat, insects, snakes, ACTUAL gators that have nothing to do with a football team from a university populated by asshats (no, I am not a fan of any other football teams, I just HATE the people in Gainsville… spend more than 24 hours there, and you’ll see what I mean), all topped off with hurricanes and more tonadoes and lightning strikes than almost any other place on earth. Yeah, sorry all southern states pretty much get an “F” from me. It is also (as previously stated by Monticello) VERY obvious that you have never lived in Colorado. Amazing people (ESPECIALLY the illegal immigrants by the way, since the ones there are here to work their asses off 90% of the time), strong family values, heavy concentrations of corporate offices and businesses, and easy as hell to find work at any time that you want it most of the time. Add to that less drug problems than almost any place else in the country, because why do meth if weed is legal? The only places that get “too much snow” are up in the high mountains, and there are plenty of areas that are far more moderate than Idaho year round. Snow = water, which also equals the Colorado River, and the source of water for a lot of states west of Colorado. What commodities would you rather have in you back yard when the SHTF than an almost limitless supply of clean mountain spring water, the best micro-brew beers in the country, and weed? Barter economies will mean Coloradans are the richest people in the world! Plus the bison, lamb, and elk that come out of Colorado are world famous for their quality. Enjoy your potatoes – I’ll be eating some of the best meat on the planet when the end comes! Maybe I’ll trade you a few ounces for a few bags of potatoes every now and then… if you’re lucky. The demand will be high.

      not worth the reading time

FYI: North Dakota also has enough missiles stored in it to blow up half America, that is just another good reason to steer clear of that place.
I think you under rated some places though.

      • WhatBox?

Actually, place where there are many missiles would be good. Why target an area when they will be launched off and gone? It’s a wasted target. I would say just staying away from major cities is the best.

    • Se777en

This article is so inaccurate. It just made me laugh out loud.

    • Archie1954

Unfortunately after reading this article there really isn’t anywhere in the US that is an excellent place to ride out a man made or natural disaster. I think a person should consider leaving the US altogether. What about the lake district of British Columbia. It’s located about a third of the way up the province and approximately in the middle between the north coast and the Alberta border. Lots of inexpensive large parcels of land for sale, hundreds of fresh water lakes good for fishing. Away from the problems of urban centers. Country living but with the medical and social amentities of an urban structure. Think about it, a small population (about 5 million in the whole province including over 2 million in the Vancouver area), a largely beneficent provincial government that pretty well leaves everyone alone to do their own thing and a natural paradise. What more do you want?

    • Levi

I’m fairly sure you did not intend this to be anything of an “advisory” nature- just your thoughts on each state’s advantages and dis…

A lot of work has obviously gone in to developing this list, but it is so arbitrary as to be almost worthless. Two quick examples that stood out to me being a southerner: a pro for Georgia is peaches but you don’t list it as a pro for Alabama where many peaches are grown as well, or a con for Colorado is immigration yet it isn’t mentioned as a con for North Carolina. So again, your list, while maybe giving you some sense of security in your decisions is, to me, arbitrary and worthless.

We check Immigration Status in Idaho…not a Citizen, keep the hell out. We also strongly believe in the 2nd Amendment, most folks carry and we have a very low crime rate as a result. Neighbors like to help neighbors…strangers beware, see note on 2nd Amendment. If you are a patriot for this country, come on up, if you’re not, see note on 2nd Amendment. If you are a person who in any way celebrated or cheered on 9/11/2001, see note on 2nd Amendment.

Florida; Pros: University of Florida Gators, oranges, low taxes, southern hospitality, Disneyworld, Gainesville, warm weather, beautiful beaches, Daytona
The Gators are a Yankee school and the natives hate them.Southern hospitality is almost dead because of the Yankee carpetbaggers.Walt Disney was a Satanist child molester who destroyed some of the most sacred springs and Indian sites in Florida with that abomination.Gainesville was one of the most beautiful places on Earth before that happened. The main threat to beaches and everything natural is Yankees, and Daytona would be nice without the illegals and Yankees.I just thank god for men like Allen B.West that have the balls to defend our great Sovereign  Indian nation.
