Gregory Rayburn , Hostess CEO and maker of such loved snack foods as Twinkies and Ding Dongs, warned increasingly aggressive labor union leaders that their tactics could result in the company having to shut down. It appears Big Labor did not believe him. They should have. As of today, Rayburn announced his intention to begin liquidating the multi-billion dollar company – a process that will result in the loss of nearly 19,000 jobs.

Hostess Brands Inc. says it’s going out of business after striking workers across the country crippled its ability to make its Twinkies, Ding Dongs and other snacks.
The company had warned employees that it would file a motion with U.S. Bankruptcy Court Friday seeking permission to shutter its operations and sell its brands if plants hadn’t resumed normal operations by a Thursday evening deadline. The deadline passed without a deal.

You beat me to the punch. Twinkies are teeth-killers. Although I hate to see folks lose their jobs.
The best spoof I ever saw about Twinkies was in the movie “Zombie-land,” starring Woody Harrelson, who played a zombie-hunter with an obsession for Twinkies. He finally finds an abandoned Hostess truck filled with Twinkies. But to his great disappointment, they are all ruined, which was a blessing in disguise.

Workers in the US need to internalize the fact that they have no ability to collectively bargain anymore; economic policies have been re-stacked in favor of big business monopolies again (seems to repeat itself the world over every 80 years or so), and until their ‘personhood’ is challenged and their managers’ abilities to hid behind Incorporation is severely curtailed, workers will just have to be satisfied with competing in an impoverished world labor market in a race to the bottom of the economic ladder.

It doesn’t matter if the company makes “Ding-Dongs,” or “Spaceships!” It is not the product but the union thugs and their desire for more and more. They feel that since Obama won the election that the unions have power to get what they want. It simply does not work in a Free Market. With all the government regs coming down for not only large companies but especially the small entities, the businesses are having a hard time making a profit. And profit is not a bad word. I am a bookkeeper and know some about the difficulties the small businesses are having. Many of our clients are considering closing their doors. Once business declines our jobs and the country’s GNP will steadly go down hill. Our standard of living will suffer. And now the increase taxes are staring us in the eyes. Go Figure!!
