Last year, legendary investor Jeremy Grantham of GMO published a treatise on exploding commodity prices.
He also offered a startlingly depressing outlook for the future of humanity.
Grantham believes the world has undergone a permanent “paradigm shift” in which the number of people on Earth has finally and permanently outstripped the planet’s ability to support us.
The phenomenon of ever-more humans using a finite supply of natural resources cannot continue forever, Grantham says–and the prices of metals, hydrocarbons (oil), and food are now beginning to reflect that.
Grantham believes that the planet can only sustainably support about 1.5 billion humans, versus the 7 billion on Earth right now (heading to 10-12 billion). For all of history except the last 200 years, the human population has been controlled via the limits of the food supply. Grantham thinks that, eventually, the same force will come into play again.
The hope of the optimists, of course, is that science will find a solution to this problem, the way it has for the past 150 years.
Let’s hope so.
In the meantime, here’s a snapshot of Grantham’s argument, along with his key points at the end.
In the past 200 years, the world population has exploded–just as Malthus predicted. What Malthus did not foresee was the discovery of oil and other natural resources, which have (temporarily) supported this population explosion. Those resources are now getting used up…
For the past 100 years, the prices of commodities have trended downward, as technology has made them cheaper to extract and produce. Grantham thinks that trend has now permanently ended.
Looking at oil, for example… Oil traded at about $16 a barrel for 100 years. Then, as demand outstripped supply, the paradigm shifted–to ~$35 a barrel. Now, Grantham thinks, the paradigm has shifted again, to a central value of about ~$75 a barrel
Why is the paradigm shifting? Because demand is now growing far faster than supply. The world’s oil production has barely increased since the 1970s, while oil usage has exploded.

The earth can easily sustain ten times its present population. The population of the entire earth could easily fit inside the state of Florida and dwell fairly comfortably. The imaginary “overpopulation” crisis is being exacerbated by the inequitable distribution of natural resources by profiteers.

We actually have a birth-rate crisis, where ppl are not replenishing the population by a rate that will sustain civilization.Sure they’re telling us there are 7 Billion right now, but all they do is lie to us. By the next generation populations in industrial nations overall will be down as ppl are not reproducing anymore. Pay attention to the real trends, not the exposure of lies by the NWO. In the U.S. population is down so much that the elite are allowing the reproducers into the country at rates that should alarm their power structure, but of course they are also the most easily manipulated, so they aren’t worried.

I think this article is essentially correct. It was about 400 years ago that we began using non-renewable resources. This began the industrial age, and the population skyrocketed from maybe 1/2 a billion up to today’s 7 billion. That 1/2 billion population was supported mostly by renewable resources and it took hundreds of thousands of years to even reach 1/2 billion. The jump up to 7 billion was an extraordinary event, and is supported by rapid resource exploitation.
Unfortunately resource exploitation has a cost, and that cost is increasing because we always extract the easiest to find, shallowest, biggest, purest, most proximate supply first, and leave the more difficult stuff for later, only later is now and tomorrow. The amount of energy spent to find a barrel of oil, for example, has risen from 1% of the energy in that barrel up to about 11% now, doubling every 20 to 25 years, so the next doubling takes us up to 22%, and the next after that up to 44%; that leaves insufficient energy to fuel the economy you see today.
As much as people want to deny what we face, nature has a way of keeping things in balance, and while human invention might defy nature for a short while, in the long run nature wins.
My bet is that the economy is entering a long term descent. Any rate of decline will produce a halving period, the time it takes to cut the economy in half, rinse and repeat. It is the output of the economy upon which we depend for survival. In the long run, Darwin wins, and disintegration always occurs much more rapidly than integration. A 400 year economic expansion could easily unwind over less than 100 years, and not in a pretty fashion.

The reason why laboratories like to use mice/lemmings for testing is because they share 99% of our genes while monkeys and chimpanzees only share 96%. Now, since humans do the same thing and have 99% of the same genes, there is a major difference that makes humans distinct aside from appearances. An individual lemming or a small group of individuals in a colony of lemmings do not hoard and over-accumulate a wealth of food to the point the rest of their lemming buddies starve. The rest of the colony of lemmings would overtake them by sheer numbers and take food by force.
Now we all know there are a group of human individuals who feel they are smarter than our lemming buddies. These individuals and this group believe they can hoard their wealth of food, bling, cars real estate etc, it’s all the same. They feel they can guard their wealth and power by piecing off, a form of bribe, other lemmings to help guard it. The closer you are to the few wealthiest, the more wealth and power you would receive and the further away your are the less power and money you would receive. They use their accumulation of wealth as a form of power over other individuals, to do their bidding, after all they are smarter than the rest of us, they are illuminated. Essentially it is a pyramidal shaped social structure with the most powerful (in their minds anyways) at the top, they have all the power and bling, and as you work your way away from the peak the poverty increases, along with the total number of individuals, and the power decreases . That’s the way it works in principle.
Unfortunately for them, through inbreeding, laziness, greed and corruption, they felt they were smarter than the natural order of things, a type of cheating mother nature. They were following whatever moth genes we may have, the inbreeding, laziness, greed and corruption was in the light they could not resist. It is really quite simple when you think about it. A very complex problem to analyse and evaluate but it is true. Yes, the social structure is pyramidal in shape, that is true, but the interesting thing is this, it just so happens be to be an inverted pyramid. It makes sense too, it is going against common sense.
The full weight of the colony is above them and is crushing them, the full weight of the pyramid is bearing down on them. Not them being supported at the top. They followed their most debase, carnal, anti-social instincts Their constant short-cuts caused by greed, ignoring a natural order and their lemming instincts led them to the proverbial suicidal-lemming cliff, and a suicidal leap into the sea.
