People promote apocalyptic nonsense like this because they have agendas they want to force on the country which the rest of us would normally reject as absurd. You have to frighten the population first because fear and other strong emotions impair judgment and make us more likely to acquiesce to bad decisions.
I could see how Ron Paul ran that scam with his doomsday nonsense about the American economy. Fortunately for us, the trick didn’t work and history showed him the door. Otherwise we might have gone along with the Malthusian agenda promoted by Paul’s Austrian economics gurus like Murray Rothbard, who advocated for the right to starve your own children to death without interference, apparently because the Austrian-style economy would result in famines and families would have to sacrifice a child or two just so the rest of them could survive.
