The quick summary is that the water filtration system that is supposed to remove radioactive particles from steam during venting failed miserably.
There are 31 similar GE Mk I and Mk II plants in the U.S., with containment systems that have now been proven to be worthless.
I covered this three months after Fukushima in a detailed report that laid it all out simple.
It’s not 500 times worse, it’s millions of times worse and Tepco said so right from the start, right after reactor 3 exploded but was subsequently shut up. Tepco initially stated that there was a reactor core ejection which was confirmed by the color of the blast, and that the radiation was “immeasurable”, maxing all their equipment. During the blast itself, Tepco said the radiation in the surrounding area exceeded a thousand sieverts per hour, a level so high it would kill you in 30 seconds. Many people in fact died out there, but since such a blast is impossible in the real world, the actual cause of the blast HAD TO be covered up.
The real cause was a nuclear weapon disguised as a special security camera that was put in reactor 3′s inner containment, in the suppression tank area. This camera weighed over a thousand pounds and was sized and shaped identical to a gun type nuclear weapon.
500X previous “estimates”? YEP. They HAVE TO let the truth out now, because the mess is too big to cover up. I guess the number 500 was something they figured people could grasp and did not go for the whole truth here.

More modern nukes are “boosted” by a tritium-deuterium mix — either as a gas, or as a powdered uranium or plutonium hydride. Fusion of the D-T mix produces neutrons that increase fission in the trigger material.
