Coca-Cola wants you to think that soda is not the cause of health problems for Americans, such as obesity or Type 2 diabetes (even though scientific studies link those ailments to sugary soft drinks) so it has sponsored its own scientific research, which points the finger at a sedentary lifestyle instead.
A new nonprofit organization, the Global Energy Balance Network, which is funded by Coca-Cola along with three universities, private philanthropy and a media company that produces health-focused videos, released this video that discounts research suggesting a link between soda and obesity. “Most of the focus in the popular media and in the scientific press is, ‘Oh they’re eating too much, eating too much, eating too much,’ blaming fast food, blaming sugary drinks and so on,” Steve Blair, professor at the Department of Exercise Science in the Arnold School of Public Health at the University of South Carolina, says in the video, which includes an image of a Coca-Cola bottle. “And there’s virtually no compelling evidence that that is, in fact, the cause.” (Coca-Cola did not respond to request for comment.)
