Emsi Burning Glass is proud to return again to the ASU+GSV Summit as a presenting sponsor, and we’re so excited about the presentations and panels we’ll be able to share.

Below is a list of our team’s events. Be sure to join us in San Diego or online!

Monday, April 4

2:00 p.m. at Ocean Beach, Level 3: Dynamos For Diversity, presented by Bledi Taska, EVP and Chief Economist at Emsi Burning Glass.

To reach their true potential as engines of equity, universities need to do two things at once. They must take a student-focused view about positioning undergraduates for success beyond graduation. And they must also take a broader view, developing pipelines of the talent most needed to drive regional economic growth and, in so doing, ensuring that diverse workers have a stake in their community’s prosperity.

Read more about our research into Dynamos For Diversity and racial equity here.

4:00 p.m. at Ocean Beach, Level 3: Learner-Centered Credentials, a discussion with Emsi Burning Glass VP of Product Management Daphne Dor-Ner, Western Governors University Director of Skills Architecture Kacey Thorne, and Western Governors University Vice Provost Sarah Demark.

Learners need relevant credentials that impact their career progression and earning potential. Higher education must ensure their programs and credentials will lead to increased opportunity and meaningful employment for all learners. In this session, we will explore the WGU approach for credential design using Emsi Burning Glass data and Rich Skills Descriptors. You will leave this session with a framework for more intentional credential evaluation and design at your organization.

Our newly-updated Skills Taxonomy is available here.

Tuesday, April 5

10:00 a.m. at Ocean Beach, Level 3: Bad Bets: The High Cost Of Failing Programs, presented by Emsi Burning Glass Senior Economist Rucha Vankudre.

Every new program launched by a college or other institution in higher education is a bet that the idea will resonate with students and grow enrollments—and too many of these bets don’t pay off. Roughly half of the programs that first graduated students in the 2012-13 or 2013-14 academic years reported five or fewer conferrals in 2018, according to our analysis of federal data.

10:10 a.m. at Harbor E, Level 2: Green Jobs Now, a panel featuring Emsi Burning Glass Chairman Matt Sigelman, former Colorado governor Bill Ritter, Jr., LACI Senior Director of Workforce Development Daniel Ferguson, NOAA Climate Education Coordinator Frank Niepold, and WorkingNation Chief Content Officer Joan Lynch, moderated by WorkingNation Editor In Chief Ramona Schindelheim

Protecting and repairing the environment is not just good news for our planet, it is also good news for the American worker. The demand for workers with green skills rose dramatically last year in all industries – from tech to health care to the skilled trades – and is projected to grow even more this year with the passage of the Infrastructure and Jobs Act. Using our own proprietary state-by-state research, this WorkingNation panel examines where the opportunities exist today and tomorrow for green jobs and identifies educational pathways that lead to the skills job seekers need to get these in-demand jobs.

11:00 a.m. at Seaport Ballroom F, Level 2: Moving Up, a panel featuring Emsi Burning Glass Chairman Matt Sigelman, Northern Virginia Community College President Anne Kress, OpenClassrooms CEO and Co-Founder Pierre Dubuc, Markle Foundation Employer Initiatives Director Debbie Wasden, and Emsi Burning Glass Board Director Jimmie Paschall

Students – and particularly working learners – are very clear: learning is about moving up to greater earnings and greater advancement. But how does that actually happen? What moves 4 in 10 workers out of “poverty trap jobs”—and what keeps the other 6 behind? We’ll talk about what models work best at ensuring that workers have the right skills at the right time.

2:00 p.m. at Ocean Beach, Level 3: The Emerging Degree Reset, presented by by Emsi Burning Glass Chairman Matt Sigelman

Employers are resetting degree requirements in a wide range of roles, dropping the requirement for a bachelor’s degree in many middle-skill and even some higher skill roles. This reverses a trend toward degree inflation in job postings going back to the Great Recession. This reset could have major implications for how employers find talent and open up opportunities for the two-thirds of Americans without a college education.

4:00 p.m. at Ocean Beach, Level 3: Demographic Drought: Bridging the Gap in our Labor Force, presented by Emsi Burning Glass EVP of Higher Education Luke Jankovic

In our 2021 report The Demographic Drought, we explored the people shortage that would change our world forever. From baby boomers to millennials to the 2020 Baby Bust, we tracked the rise and fall of America’s population and labor force participation rate. A year later in The Demographic Drought: Bridging the Gap in our Labor Force, we dive into the current state of the U.S. labor force, make predictions for 2022, and suggest two opportunities for increasing the labor force participation rate.
