Virtual Birthday Party for Women's Rights Leader Elizabeth Cady Stanton on November 12th

With the 2012 presidential election over, the importance of the women’s vote hasn’t been lost on the millions of women who are increasingly becoming aware of the long and difficult struggle to win the vote in the United States. It took a total of 144 years from the Declaration of Independence and 72 years from the Seneca Falls Convention in 1848.

A virtual online birthday party brings these facts to light through a virtual birthday party for women’s rights leader Elizabeth Cady Stanton. The birthday celebration includes videos that set a party atmosphere, allow viewers to follow along with the baking of a cake from a vintage suffrage cook book, present a musical tribute, and introduce party-goers to a classic documentary about Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony by award-winning filmmaker Ken Burns: “Not for Ourselves Alone.”

The virtual birthday party produced by Suffrage Wagon News Channel (suffragewagon.org) is designed for the use of individuals, families, teachers, and students as an introduction to Elizabeth Cady Stanton in Seneca Falls, New York. Cady Stanton and others launched the Seneca Falls convention in 1848.

The convention sparked a social revolution that eventually resulted in the passage of the 19th amendment to the U.S. Constitution in 1920 which enabled American women to vote.

The virtual birthday party consists of a happy birthday greeting, the baking of a cake from a recipe from a vintage suffrage cook book, music played by the great great grandchildren of American suffragist Edna Kearns, links to books about Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and a link to the documentary  “Not for Ourselves Alone.”

The virtual birthday party celebrates Cady Stanton’s birth on November 12, 1815. It makes history come alive and urges everyone to visit Seneca Falls, New York where the Seneca Falls Convention was held, plus other related cultural and historic sites nearby.

Planning for a Votes for Women historic trail is underway in New York State that will eventually link numerous historic sites, of which Seneca Falls is one. The trail, a work in progress, is expected to contribute to economic development through the promotion of cultural and heritage tourism.

The virtual birthday party that is free online is recommended for use in schools and as a digital link students can enjoy themselves. The party contains a brief introduction to Cady Stanton, as well as other resources. Teachers will find this useful for homework assignments, or it can be used for class presentations.

Suffrage Wagon News Channel (suffragewagon.org) celebrates the freedom of women to vote. The news channel contains stories and news of the suffrage movement as a way of building leadership today. It is intended for boys as well as girls, women and men.
