Three Things Online Students Can Learn from Oscar Pistorius

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Oscar Pistorius is a South African athlete who stole the spotlight of 2012 Summer Olympics for his never-say-die spirit and immeasurable tenacity to compete with athletes with no physical disabilities. Yes, Pistorius was born with absence of the fibula and his legs were amputated when he was just 11 months old. But that did not turn into a restraint for him. Rather, we can say, it worked as an inspiration and boosted his determination to match strength with the ‘privileged’. Oscar Pistorius is now a name synonymous with courage, determination, tenacity and resilience despite all the recent controversies around him. This legendary sportsperson can be enough of an inspiration for online students too.  How? Here is the answer.

Resilience

Pistorius was interviewed by The Telegraph (UK) correspondent Gareth Davies whom he said “I’d compete in the Olympics if I could, and I will if I can.” This determination and resilience is a common attribute among athletes with disabilities. Not just Pistorius, but you could find hundreds of other athletes with similar or varied impairments who are up for making impossible things possible. And this is where you get the first lesson of learning on the web. Never say die.

Focus

You as a learner have your own abilities and limitations. Some things you can do better than others, some things you are worse at. You need to focus on your weakness zones and work on it for better performance in class. Think about Pistorius again, the ‘Blade Runner’ who got his both legs amputated even before he started to walk! If he can overcome his challenges, why not you? Study hard, know the challenges ahead and look for a solution. Never lose your focus. Take help of peers and mentors if required.

Study your favorite subject

If you are enrolling in an online course, make sure you love your major, genuinely. Otherwise, you may get tired after a while. Think like Pistorius-“I have the ability to do it, so I feel I’d be stupid not to do it.” If you are happy studying a subject, you will definitely see success.

Athletes like Oscar Pistorius are always an inspiration for people from all walks of life. You, as a learner, should take the basic lessons of confidence, self-esteem and determination from them. Pistorius was just an example, remarkable although.
