THE CULTURAL WRECKING BALL: PUBLIC EDUCATION

By Lee Duigon

In 1887 A. A. Hodge, a theologian at Princeton University, had this to say about public education:

“I am as sure as I am of Christ’s reign that a comprehensive and centralized system of national education, separated from religion, as is now commonly proposed, will prove the most appalling enginery for the propagation of anti-Christian and atheistic unbelief, and of anti-social nihilistic ethics, individual, social and political, which this sin-rent world has ever seen.”

But Dr. Hodge needed no crystal ball to see where public education was headed. All he had to do was look backwards—say, to 1816. Here he would have read Robert Owen, one of the founders of British socialism, describing the role of public education in his utopian system:

“Give me a colony of infants; I will suppress all erroneous reasoning and all false conclusions… I will then so educate my children that they will grow up to despise those things which now they most value…”

Fast-forward to the here and now. Alameda, California: A teacher at Encinal High School, as an extra credit assignment, told his students to nose around their parents’ dressers and closets until they found “sex toys,” and then use their phones to take pictures of themselves displaying what they found (The story I’ve linked to includes a TV news report). Also see Oregon’s Sex Education program for 11 year olds.

Parents got a bit peeved when they found out about this. The TV news clip shows a “school official” stonewalling parents and reporters—“Sorry, it’s being investigated, I’m not at liberty to discuss that,” etc. So nobody knows whether Mr. Sex Toys has been suspended, or fired, or transferred to another school, or even what subject he was teaching… although you’d think some of his students must have blabbed by now.

Where do teachers get their ideas?

In 1933 a great and influential public education theorist, George Counts, published a little book called “A Call to the Teachers of the Nation,” in which he exalted public school teachers as “at the same time the loyal servants and the spiritual leaders of the masses…” Sounds good, doesn’t it? “Above all, the teacher is a bearer of culture and a creator of social values.”

What? Hold it! Who asked public school teachers to create our social values? Well, they kind of invited themselves to do it, while nobody was looking—while parents in good faith, trusting blindly in the goodness of the enterprise, sent their kiddies off to the public schools to absorb those social values created by their teachers. Believe it or not, teachers’ unions used to resist this sort of thing. But that began to stop a hundred years ago. Now they use “education” as a wrecking ball to bring down a culture they don’t like so that one more to their taste can be built upon the ruins.

Today our public schoolmarms are only too happy to create our social values. In fact, their unions insist on it. Our government insists on it. And so you have this unidentified boob in Alameda sending his students out on a scavenger hunt for sex toys. “School officials” have suggested that it was only meant to be a joke. Ha, ha. As usual, the joke is on the people.

Since its beginning in the first half of the 19th century, public education—at least according to those men and women who created and developed it—has been all about remaking the culture. The “educators” didn’t like the culture that they saw in America—Christian, family-centered, individualistic. They wanted a culture that was non-religious, in which the family gave way to the state and individualism to conformity and dumb obedience. They have labored on this ever since, and never stopped.

Please don’t take my word for it. These characters put all their thoughts and schemes in writing, and had them published. If we say they are anti-Christian, it’s only because they said it first about themselves.

(You will find hundreds of these quotes in “The Messianic Character of American Education” by R.J. Rushdoony, available from The Chalcedon Foundation.)

Whether it’s Kwaanzaaa, or Gender Choice, or having the kiddies attend their second-grade teacher’s “marriage” to his boyfriend, or Environmental “Justice” (whatever that is), or the History of America’s Crimes Against the Whole Planet, today’s unionized public school teachers are busy every day creating new social values and stuffing them down your children’s throats.

And you, America, are letting them do it.
