How Virtual Reality Is Going to Modernize Education

Technology and education go hand in hand. Their union allows the world in which we live to change and grow. What’s ironic about their marriage, however, is that while education breeds technology, the educational sector is often one of the last ones to fully integrate new technology. For whatever reason that may be- hesitancy to change what worked, lack of funding, lack of foresight- this happens again and again.

The methods of education haven’t changed much over that past few years. Online education has done well and students work with computers all the time, but beyond that, new and innovative technology is rarely embraced in this sector. That may change when virtual reality starts to gain some traction and become more accessible for teachers. Many schools are already using virtual reality technology, while many schools are developing their own technology that will soon make virtual reality a very real part of their classroom.
 

Working Together in Virtual Reality Helps Students Become More Socially Integrated

While it may be difficult for some students to work and function together or as part of a group, once you place them in a virtual environment, they may be more likely to participate and engage with one another. If you can simply appeal to their interests, you may be able to take those students who are usually withdrawn and make them socially interactive. The University College Dublin School of Education and Lifelong learning was able to produce some examples of students who had conquered their social problems using virtual reality.

Kids who used to stay in their shells, so to speak, would engage with the technology and thereby engage with one another. Students who had little confidence in their own skills could develop their talents and become proficient in areas of learning that they could not before.
 

The Impossible Becomes Possible

Of course, the biggest advantage to using virtual technology is that it allows people to interact with environments, objects and organisms that they would not otherwise be able to experience. It can open their creative processes and get them thinking about possibilities they may have never considered otherwise. Instead of studying archaeology or history, they can experience it and learn about these subjects first-hand.

They can acquire practical knowledge while never having to go outside the classroom, and that is invaluable. Students can experience locations that would otherwise be too dangerous for them and learn how to keep themselves safe and know what kinds of things to look out for. It would not be possible to do that safely outside of virtual reality.

Motivating Students through Virtual Games

Game-based learning is all about motivating students. It entices them to learn and to experience things they might not be interested in otherwise. Virtual education can make this even more successful, taking education to an entirely new level and providing a richer experience.

Education is a tool for gaining knowledge and preparing students for the real world. If they can engage with that world in a safe environment, then they can gain more suitable skills and acquire more practical knowledge. They will also have a more enjoyable time in their formative years as they prepare for adulthood, and their educational experiences can be something they look forward to instead of dreading.

Games don’t need to be the only source of education in the classroom, but their presence can make education much more engaging to students. It can also keep them motivated to do the other things they need to do in order to learn information that they would normally have little interest in.

Virtual Reality Allows for New Kinds of Rewards

Th learning process has always involved progress reports of how much students have learned, but virtual reality is going to change that. In the current education system, failure is punished and success seems to be treated almost neutrally. In virtual reality, success can be rewarded, and that kind of rewarding behaviour can entice the children to come back for more and to want to learn more. It can dramatically affect their desire to study.

In virtual reality, students will be able to work together to achieve goals, creating partnerships and enjoying rewarding experiences unlike anything they have felt before. This not only spurs them on to greater success and more leaning, but it allows them to develop closer bonds with their classmates.

Creative Learning Is Being Inspired

Traditional education has its limits, and virtual reality can push far beyond that to something much greater. It will take time and work to ensure it is adopted, but the technology can be adapted to suit the needs of the teachers and students.

Students are going to be excited about creating things in a virtual environment and pushing their imaginations to new and exciting places. That’s what we have to look forward to, and we can’t wait to see some of the other ways that this technology will change the education system.
