Complete Guide to Writing a Student Resume

Writing a resume could be tough for everyone, especially for students without extensive work experience. However, even if you haven’t had a job, it doesn’t mean you haven’t got the required skills.

Everyone has their own life experience and acquires different skills and knowledge. You just need to discover your greatest strengths. Then you can show those skills in your resume.

If you are too terrified about writing a CV on your own, you can use cheap essay writing service. But if you want to try to do this on your own, then hopefully this complete guide with helpful tips will make the writing process much easier for you.

  1. Begin with a template.

If you don’t have experience in writing a resume, then a template will help you. Using a template saves your time and helps avoid main errors. Choose the simplest one without fancy fonts or other decorative elements.

  1. Adapt your CV to the vacancy.

Even if you don’t have much work experience, you should specify the most relevant professional skills to the position and present yourself as a perfect candidate for this job.

You need to read the job description attentively and take a look at the basic requirements for the employee. Based on this, you can tailor your resume for a specific job. This will give you more chances that the employer will be interested in you as a candidate for the position.

  1. Put the education before the work experience.

You should put the education section above your work experience one. Use this section to list your degrees, grade-point averages (only if it’s higher than 3.0), academic honors.

Don’t forget to mention your educational achievements (if they are related to the position you’re applying for).

  1. Keep it short and up to the point.

Your resume should not take more than a single page. As a student, you surely don’t have enough work experience. But you should use only the relevant information; you don’t need to mention every detail.

  1. Focus on your skills.

If your resume only mentions your diploma, then this will not be enough for the employer.

To make the employer interested and get a job, you need to focus on describing your skills.

If you didn’t have work experience, you can mention skills like quick learning and adaptability, knowledge of the social media, ability to work with new technologies.

  1. Don’t apologize for the lack of experience.

Even if you aren’t experienced enough for the job or don’t meet the desired qualification, you can still draw the employer’s attention. Employers don’t expect you to have a lot of experience if you are a student. They will be most interested in your attitude to work.

You can always focus on the positive aspects of the fact that you are a beginner. The earlier you begin to make a career, the farther you can go. Place your bet on your enthusiasm and interest in the vacancy.

  1. Use action verbs.

Start the phrases in your descriptions with action verbs; describe your experiences in a dynamic way.

There are some words you might want to use in your resume: organized, achieved, improved, mentored, managed, influenced, increased, negotiated, launched, led, calculated, trained, tutored, researched, created, designed, drafted, and edited.

  1. Promote yourself.

The way you present yourself to the employer is very important. Remember that when you will be writing your CV.

List all the qualities that make you a good candidate for the position (for example, that you are a responsible, communicative and hardworking person). Describe your strengths and explain how you are able to benefit the company. The goal of a resume is to sell yourself, keep it in mind.

  1. Include your contact details.

Make sure that the employer knows how to contact you.

Put your name at the beginning of your resume. Don’t forget to include your email address and telephone number. Make sure it sounds professional.

  1. Write a cover letter.

You should certainly write a cover letter to your resume. If you know the name of the HR, address them personally in the beginning. Then write a short description about yourself and the position you are applying for. Insert your cover letter into the body of your email and don’t forget to attach your resume.

  1. Try to avoid using buzzwords and clichés.

Clichés and buzzwords reduce your chances that the employer will be interested in your resume. Try to avoid phrases like “think outside of the box”, “results-driven”, “team player”, “hard worker”, “strategic thinker”, “excellent communicator”, “detail-oriented” and others. If you aren’t sure if a phrase is a cliché, better check it just in case before putting it on your resume.

  1. Have someone read it.

Finally, you have finished writing your resume and cover letter. Now it’s time to show it to the person you trust and ask for their constructive feedback. Of course, it should be someone who’s able to analyze your resume and cover letter from the professional point of view.

After letting this person read your resume, ask them about weaknesses and gaps. What would they consider adding in the CV? You can even consult a few people: this will definitely improve the quality of your resume.

  1. Proofread your resume.

Review your resume very carefully. Make sure there are no spelling or grammar errors and check it for typos (you can use the spell check feature in your text editor).

Don’t forget to proofread it after you finish. Even the small mistakes could ruin the impression you were trying to make.

The fact that you are a student doesn’t mean that you can’t get a good and qualified job.

As a student, you’ve already got the skills and education. You should only convince an HR manager to hire you. The first step to convincing is to create a strong resume. But if you apply enough effort, even the lack of experience won’t be able to stop you from getting the job.
