Meghan Markle’s three secrets for a successful career
The odds are that you’ve heard about one of the most talked about women of 2017 Meghan Markle. Some of you know her as the lucky fiancée of Prince Harry, some may know her as Rachael Zane from Suits, but did you know that she is the United Nations Women ambassador and has a degree in international studies from Northwestern University? Markle shares her advice for success in the book The Game Changers, which features inspiring stories from forty fabulous women. Here are her secrets.
SECRET 1: THINK LONG-TERM
The world holds a lot of opportunities for us. Sometimes we tear ourselves to bits, jumping from one thing to another. In order not to lose yourself in the process, think ahead. Is this something that you would want to be doing in a year? In two years? In five years? Don’t spend five minutes on something, if you understand that it’s not worth spending five years on. Think about your hobbies and what you love doing. Perhaps you can earn money from your favorite pastime
SECRET 2: DON’T BE TOO HARSH ON YOURSELF
It’s ok not to be perfect. You shouldn’t be pushing yourself to the limit if you know that it is hurting you. Be kind to yourself and value your time, emotional and physical health. There is already a lot of standards women have to live up to, so don’t pressure yourself and give yourself some time to relax and be you. Whether you’re overwhelmed with work, tasks from school or have a busy social calendar you can find some tools or programs to help you out with that.
- Peace of mind: Headspace, Calm
- Help with studying: GoConqr, Bookwormlab
- Planning: AppMyDay, BusyConf
- Emotional health: Silver Cloud, NHS
SECRET 3: BE PATIENT
Important work takes time. Set goals, make plans, do your job. But don’t rush, good things come to those who wait. It’s great that you have plans to conquer the world, but don’t get frustrated if it doesn’t happen overnight. Of course, it doesn’t mean that you should just sit and wait for some miracle to happen. And as James Clear added to the famous saying by John Heywood that although Rome wasn’t in a day, they were laying bricks every hour.
Being a successful, ambitious and independent woman in our days shouldn’t be daunting and tiresome. Enjoy life and follow these simple rules to achieve your life goals.

She was brilliant in “Suits.”
It’s a great show, superb writing, best ensemble cast since “Frasier” — more engrossing than “The Veep.” It takes really superb, fantastic writing and restrained directorial good taste (no over-the-top cheap sex, as in the retch-worthy “The Deuce”) to get me even to commit an hour to TV these days.
I love “Blue Bloods,” I enjoyed “Hawai’i Five-O” for a while (until it became too much of a soap opera) — and “Suits” is absolutely the only show besides “Frasier” I would buy to own & put on a shelf.
Everyone in it is fantastic, completely believable in a completely-unbelievable plot. There’s a poise and a calm to Meghan Markle that translated well for the Rachel Zane role; spirit, adventurousness & a firm grip on the real world. This is a very strong lady who will make a difference, together with the most engaged & positively activist members of the Royal Family — not just Prince Harry, but also the Prince of Wales & the Duchess of Cornwall, both of whom have a passionate zest for life and doing genuinely Good Works.
As the writer in social studies at the official site acewriters I believe this is an important milestone moment in remembering what the real purpose is of having “privileges,” advantages, wealth, status, the world’s attention: Helping Others. Even just by opening more minds, breaking away from stereotypes and putting one’s best foot forward. Less cursing, less partying, more rolling up of sleeves and creating lasting changes for a sustainable future in which everyone’s opportunities are improved, so long as their heart is in the right place (and not on monetizing their offices, crafting secret schemes to ruin others, vapid self-promotion for the sake of self-aggrandizement, or simply indulging in mindless hedonistic excess).
Well done, all! Kudos to all the parents and grandparents, living and deceased.
