Happy Constitution Day

In September, 1787, as the Constitutional Convention was wrapping up, word of what was going on had begun to spread like wild fire through the city of Philadelphia. One day – as Benjamin Franklin stepped out of the meetinghouse – a woman stopped him. “Sir, what have you given us?” she asked. Franklin replied, “A republic ma’am, if you can keep it.”

And that has been our charge ever since. It is up to us to make sure that the federal government does not grow too large, or too powerful.

Today, I encourage each of you to celebrate the 223rd year of the United States Constitution. This document, which is just as important today as it was in 1787, frames a limited federal government which has so far endured.

When the Founding Fathers wrote the Constitution, they did so, in part, as an answer for the grievances laid forth in the Declaration of Independence. They wanted to create a government that would not have the power to grow as large and as oppressive as the monarchy that had just been thrown off. Indeed, they decided that the best way to protect the people from an overbearing government was to put We the People in charge.

I am running for Congress because I do not think the federal government is taking this country in the right direction, and I don’t think Mr. Spratt – or anyone representing the 5th District – should be voting for the Obama-Pelosi agenda 98% of the time. If you agree, then I hope you will help me by volunteering, donating, and, most importantly, voting on November 2nd.
