Hiroshima, August 6 / Nagasaki, August 9

Saturday is the anniversary of the U.S. bombing of Hiroshima, Japan. The U.S. Federal government is the only government on earth that has used nuclear weapons to annihilate thousands of innocent, non-combatant civilians.

While some have suggested that this saved thousands of U.S. soldiers from dying in a U.S. invasion of Japan, others of equal credibility and authority have rebutted that claim. Japan was ready to surrender before the Bombs were dropped, but wanted the Emperor to be allowed to save face. The U.S. Government demanded unconditional surrender, dropped the atomic bombs on innocent populations of people, then allowed Japan to keep the Emperor anyway.

Speculations about how many U.S. soldiers might have died if there had actually been an invasion of Japan should be weighed against speculations as to how many Chinese would have been murdered by Japan had Japan conquered mainland China, and these speculations need to be compared with the non-speculative actual results of history: over 60 million Chinese were actually murdered by the communists, who filled the void the U.S. left by disabling Japan.

All these speculations cannot justify nuclear annihilations of populations. They simply have no legitimate place, because the Bible says we should beat our swords into plowshares. The Bible also says we are not to resist “the powers that be”:

Romans 13:1 Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.
2 Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.

Is the United States now on the brink of receiving economic damnation 70 years later for resisting Powers-That-Be Group A (The Axis powers) and replacing them with Powers-That-Be Group B (the Communists), inflicting 72 million casualties world-wide as a direct effect of the resistance, and another 100 million deaths subsequently inflicted by U.S.-backed Communism?

Sentencing this many people to death — sacrificing them to geo-political speculation — is the mark of unbridled arrogance on the part of a government that thinks it is God. “The Powers that be” are not ordained by Washington D.C.

And can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are of the gift of God? That they are not to be violated but with his wrath? Indeed I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just: that his justice cannot sleep for ever: that considering numbers, nature and natural means only, a revolution of the wheel of fortune, an exchange of situation, is among possible events: that it may become probable by supernatural interference! The Almighty has no attribute which can take side with us in such a contest.

I’m here because of the bombs. My grandfather was in the 4th marine division and scheduled to land on mainland Japan. He was called off because of the bombs. My grandfather told me the Japanese people would have never given up.The bombs shocked the japanese into immediate surrender .He fought on Tinnian, Sipan, Okanawa and Iwo Jima. After the war he stayed in Japan for a while and was very happy the war did not go to a ground war on the mainland where BOTH sides would have taken HUGE loses. MY GRANDFATHER WAS THERE AND WATCHED MOTHERS THROGH THERE BABIES OFF A CLIFF SO THEY WOULD NOT GO INTO ENEMY HANDS. THE JAPANESE WOULD HAVE NEVER SURRENDERED. THE WAS IS OVER. WE CAN GO ON WITH LIFE OR READ ARTICLES LIKE THIS GARBAGE THAT PUTS SALT ON OLD WOUNDS.

Why We Needed to Drop the Atomic Bombs on Japan

In August of 1945, the war against the Empire of Japan continued on. The war in Europe had ended in May of that year with the surrender of Nazi Germany.

While the Japanese were almost beaten, they were not yet defeated. Even by mid -1945, Japan had no intentions of surrendering. As a result, the United States was planning for the invasion of Japan and calculating the likely number of deaths among American combat troops. An invasion, while necessary, was not an attractive option.

But other options had become available. After years of research and development, the United States had successfully tested its first atomic weapon on July 16, 1945. With Japan’s continued refusal to surrender, President Truman authorized the use of these weapons.

On August 6, 1945, the first actual atomic bomb was dropped on the City of Hiroshima. It was a uranium bomb called “Little Boy” and was dropped from a modified B-29 bomber, “Enola Gay.” On August 9, 1945, a second atomic bomb was dropped on the City of Nagasaki. It was a plutonium bomb called “Fat Man” and was dropped by a different B-29 bomber named “Bockscar.”

The dropping of these two atomic bombs forced the Japanese to surrender. That saved thousands upon thousands of American troops. It also saved thousands of Japanese who would have been killed during the months of invasion. The Japanese fought fiercely on the various islands in the Pacific: Guadalcanal, Iwo Jima, Saipan, the Solomons, the Philippines, the Marianas and many more. War planners knew from experience that the death toll would be heavy – on both sides.

The US Marines took the brunt of the casualties. The US Navy brought the marines to the enemy-held islands in a fleet of troop transports called “APAs.” My father was Chief Petty Officer on APA 42 – the USS Elmore. The job of the USS Elmore and her sisters was to get close to shore and release the landing craft. The Marines took it from there.

The use of the two atomic bombs ended the war and saved many lives. And let me be honest here, it saved many American lives. That is a good thing.

My father served in the Navy from 1943 until 1946 and fought in the Pacific . My father-in-law served for over 20 years in the Marines. He lied about his age and joined the Marines in 1945. He was in basic training in 1945 and would have been part of the invasion of the Japanese Home Islands in 1946. He could very likely been on my father’s ship.

The Japanese were preparing for the inevitable invasion. One of their prime targets were the US troop transports, like my father’s ship. They were building jet-powered Kamikaze flying bombs that would destroy the troop transports. The goal was to obliterate these ships before they could release their landing craft.

Had the atomic bombs not been used, the United States would have been forced to invade Japan. They Japanese would have fiercely resisted. They believed that their emperor was a god. They would defend their god at all costs. So, American soldiers would have been fighting armed civilians – women and children – not just Japanese soldiers.

My father and my father-in-law would most likely have been killed in the invasion. So, I take this matter personally. In my opinion, we absolutely needed to drop the two atomic bombs on Japan in an effort to end the war as early as possible. Both my wife and I are alive today because we used the atomic bombs on Japan.

Last summer, I took my family to the U.S. Air Force Museum in Dayton, Ohio. I actually got to touch Bockscar – the B-29 that dropped the A-bomb on Nagasaki. I said “thank-you” to the brave airman that delivered that weapon to the enemy. Thank-you from the son (and son-in-law) of two war survivors!

I find it offensive that ignorant people say that we should have not dropped the atomic bombs on Japan. Such people have no understanding of that period in history. There is no doubt in my mind, that more people would have died if the A-bombs had not been used.

But it’s not just a matter of historical ignorance. It is a failure of moral courage to confront evil. Evil must be opposed or evil will prevail. St. Thomas Augustine defined what he called a “just war.” WW II was a just war and we were justified to fight that evil. When cowardly men shirk their responsibilities to fight evil, then evil inevitably wins. We fought. We used atomic bombs. We won. We saved a lot of lives in the process.
