Thorium vs Uranium: Podcast

PODCAST – ProspectingJournal.com – In the aftermath of Fukushima, there’s been plenty of debate about the future of uranium. As we’ve all seen, uranium stocks have taken quite a tumble since the market re-opened on March 13. Judging by the response, it’s fair to say that the world is skeptical about the safety of nuclear power going into the future.

But the reality is that we’re an energy hungry society, and the only way that we’re going to be able to keep up with this demand going forward, will be to consider our options. Coal, gas, hydro and nuclear are the only suitable options for base-level electricity at this time.

Germany is pulling away. France is wavering. But India, Russia and China are all talking about new reactors and plunging forward, and many of the base ideas behind these newer energy projects surrounds the use of thorium over uranium.
This talk about thorium is in the pipeline due to the safety and green issues that will always arise with new nuclear developments.

Apparently thorium is safer, cleaner and just overall fantastic. The drawback is, it’s been held back significantly from government development because it doesn’t produce plutonium, which is necessary in bomb making. The current market for thorium is only about $150,000 a year… but if India and China move forward, thorium will go from being a waste product in REE developments, to being a commodity.

The podcast ProspectingFM did an interview with Mickey Fulp (mercenarygeologist.com) on the topic, and he brought us up to speed, talking about thorium’s uses, history and future, along with some companies that may be in line to produce thorium in the future.

ProspectingFM – Episode 2: Mickey Fulp

Mickey is a geologist with over 30 years experience, having discovered ore formations in Chile, Nevada, British Columbia and Peru. He’s a world traveller and has his finger on the pulse of mining today.
