The secret memo outlined the growing concern about Canada’s booming oilsands sector’s substantial environmental threats.

Despite industry claims about using alternative extraction methods to reduce land disruption and heat-trapping gases, these alternative methods to mining produce three times the emissions, drastically accelerating the industry’s impact on climate change.

The memo also warned that damages to Alberta’s wetlands, wildlife habitat, and landscape are potentially irreversible.

Canada’s oilsands industry is a critical economic sector producing an estimated 1.5 million barrels of oil a day and providing roughly 100,000 direct and indirect jobs in Canada. The sector is expected to bring in over $1.7 trillion over the next 25 years.

“This rapid growth has shed light on the significant environmental challenges associated with this economically important sector”, the memo put mildly.

The fact that this memorandum, forewarning the irreversible environmental degradation inflicted by the oilsands industry, was intended to be completely confidential speaks for itself.  You can read more here.
