Your Questions About Solar Panels For Your Home For Sale
Joseph asks…
Vivint solar came to my house and offered to install solar panels on my roof. They gave a great sales pitch and my father signed the contract that allows them to install the solar panels. I was not home.
I’ve now found out they’re a bad company and there are so many tricks within the contract, one being that we have to pay for any generated energy even if we don’t use it.
Fortunately, the contract was signed by my father just yesterday. The contract states that we can cancel with no penalty within 10 days. The thing is, since the salesperson lied about almost everything, I can’t even trust him. If I call him and tell him I want it cancelled, he may just come back in a month and deny it never happened and charge me some stupid fee or something. How do I know FOR SURE that the contract is cancelled?
The cancellation notice says that I can cancel the transaction with the following terms: “To cancel this transaction, mail or deliver a signed and dated copy of this cancellation notice or any other written notice, or send a telegram to ________ not later than midnight of the tenth day after the transaction date”. I will make sure to ask them for a written copy in return and also will send with certified receipt mail. Thank you both!
Henry Dover answers:
Put your cancellation notice in writing to them and have them return a signed copy to you.

The size of the solar panel will be determined by a few factors. The key factors will be the capacity of the battery bank (in Amp Hours), how quickly you want the solar panels to recharge your batteries, and also what your solar resources are. There are a lot of informative articles on these subjects here.

You can still use batteries to store your energy produced by the solar panels, just make sure to use “deep cycle” batteries and not car batteries. Deep cycle batteries are designed for a continuous slow discharge and recharge over the course of a day (perfect for solar applications). Car batteries are designed to provide a very quick discharge of a lot of captive energy (in order to start the car’s engine) and are also designed to be quickly recharged by the car’s alternator.
You can find a selection of deep cycle batteries here.

Hope this info helps.
