(Before It's News)

Fuel is an important commodity which is needed by almost all human beings in today’s world. Apart from the conventional fuel sources, there are several unconventional sources which are growing quite popular. Biomass is fuel which is developed from organic materials and is known to be a renewable and sustainable energy source used to generate electricity or other modes of power.

What exactly is Biomass Power?

Biomass power is basically carbon neutral electricity which is generated from renewable organic waste which is usually dumped in landfills or openly burned. Upon burning, the energy in biomass is discharged as heat. For example: if you possess a fireplace, it means you are already contributing in the use of biomass since the wood you burn is tagged as a biomass fuel.

Presently, there are numerous biomass power plants in which wood waste or other types of waste is burned in order to produce steam which then runs a turbine to make electricity, or offer heat to industries as well as homes. With the outburst of new technologies, any form of emissions from burning biomass managed under industrial facilities are generally lesser than emissions created using fossil fuels.

Biomass Energy

There is another aspect called as Biomass energy, which needs to be understood carefully. This is the energy which is enclosed inside plants and animals. This may include organic matter of all sorts: plants, animals, as well as waste products from organic matters. These forms of energy sources are grouped under biofuels and naturally include wood chips, manure, rotted trees, sewage, tree components and mulch. It is necessary to understand that, chlorophyll available in plants absorb carbon dioxide from the surrounding atmosphere along with the water from the ground using the process called as photosynthesis. This energy is passed to animals when they consume them. It is counted as a renewable source of energy since carbon dioxide and water enclosed in plants and animals are discharged back in the atmosphere once they are burned.

Special Types of Biomass Fuel

The biomass fuel market has been surging high due to the introduction of certain special variety of fuel sources. Some of them are:

Mill Residues

Mill residues are counted as a much more economically efficient fuel as compared to forestry residues. Biomass facilities merged with and essential to the mill operation hold an advantage of removing transportation. Over the past few years, mill residues have been successfully used to generate electricity and steam.

Dedicated Biomass Crops

It is interesting to know that, dedicated biomass crops are specially grown to fuel a particular biomass project. The most evident example of dedicated biomass crops includes corn varieties which are grown out of ethanol production. Moreover, fast-growing poplar trees are also been farm-raised to be used as a biomass fuel; however, this hasn’t proven to be sustainable on the economic grounds. At last, another dedicated crop is soybean oils which is used in the creation of biodiesel.

Chemical Recovery Fuels

Chemical recovery fuels are known to be responsible for over 60 percent of the complete biomass energy consumption in the United States. Many of the chemical recovery facilities are possessed by pulp and paper facilities, which is an integral part of the facility operation.

Advantages of Biomass Fuel

The biomass fuel industry enjoys a lot of importance in today’s world due to the rising advantages of this category of energy source. Some of the advantages are as follows:

No Harmful Emissions

Biomass energy is known to create no harmful carbon dioxide emissions. Many energy sources struggle to curb their carbon dioxide emissions, leading to harmful effects on the ozone layer and also increase the negatives of greenhouse gases. This energy source is completely natural, and has no such side effects of carbon dioxide.

Clean Energy

This form of energy is mainly restricted to clean use. Biomass energy is used in commercial businesses such as airlines. Moreover, this is considered good for the environment and also good for business.

Renewable and Abundant

Biomass products are quite abundant in nature. Moreover, this energy form is also renewable. This develops from the fact that, it arises from living sources, which means that these products possibly never run out. It is found that, in the United Kingdom, biomass fuels are developed through recycled chicken droppings.
