Maya Angelou born as Marguerite Johnson was not just a name but an identity, a personality that had the courage and conviction of bringing change in the society, nation and the entire world and she surely did the same before leaving us all behind. Maya Angelou was a notable American poet, an amazing story teller, a singer, dancer, actor, director and a civil right activist. A visionary educator and an active spokesperson for the rights of blacks and women is sadly no more with us today. The entire team of Punch TV along with our CEO Joseph Collins extends their heartfelt condolence to Angelou’s family and prays that Ms Angelou’s soul rests in peace.

Maya Angelou was not just another poet or an engaging story teller, in fact she was a gem that embellished and enlightened the whole world for years with her outstanding literary works and honest political views. Maya was born on April 4, 1928 in St. Louis in a black American family who went on to transform and revolutionize the way people actually perceive blacks in America and the entire world. Tall, regal and majestic, Angelou went on to defy all kinds of racism and categorical blocks imposed by the society and went on to become the very first black woman who reaped fruits of mainstream success in artistic and literary work and TV networks began calling for interviews.

Maya Angelou worked as a dancer, singer and actor before she debuted on the writing front in the year 1970 with her record-breaking autobiography ‘I know why the caged bird sings’. This autobiography introduced the unique concept of fragmented biographies because Maya actually went on to write and release another 5 of her autobiographies that continued the story of her life journey one after the other. A childhood rape victim and a single mother who performed at strip clubs to earn herself a living, the journey of life was never a bed of roses for Maya but still she went on to achieve the most unachievable and magnificent things in life through her expansive range of talents and her heartfelt dedication.

She was a close associate of the former American President Bill Clinton and his wife Hilary Clinton for whom she delightfully read out her poem ‘On the pulse of the morning’ that later went on to become the best-selling poem compilation of all times. Maya Angelou was not just a powerful and fearless woman who possessed multiple talents, in fact she was someone with an eye to find the best talent as well. Maya gave the most powerful and successful woman to the world in the form of Oprah Winfrey and played the inevitable role of Oprah’s mentor and motivator.

Maya Angelou received numerous awards in various categories besides winning the prestigious Presidential medal of freedom, the highest civilian honor in the United States and is named as one of the most powerful women in the world of all times by ladies Home journal.

Maya Angelou was a literary genius who had the courage and vision to bring change in the society which she successfully did and her demise is certainly a national loss.
