Wale: Making Something Out Of Nothing

It’s not every day that you get to make history with one of your idols. For Wale fans, many know how huge of a fan he is of Jerry Seinfeld and the Seinfeld TV show. In fact, two of his early mixtapes, The Mixtape About Nothing and More About Nothing were largely inspired by Seinfeld. They even featured actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus (who plays “Elaine” on the show). So it’s no surprise that Wale would try this attempt again for one of his studio albums. As one of rap music’s best kept secrets, he began to get discouraged about the lack of respect that he was getting in the industry, after several mixtapes, hit singles and his Ambition and The Gifted albums. But in 2013, everything changed. Jerry Seinfeld’s wife just happens to be a huge fan of Wale and set up the first meeting between the rapper and legendary comedian. They immediately clicked and Jerry Seinfeld quickly became Wale’s spiritual advisor of sorts for his new album, The Album About Nothing. The result? Wale sold an impressive 100,000 copies in his first week’s release, booting Kendrick Lamar from the No. 1 spot and boasting 40,000 more in sales than Ludacris’s newLudaversal album. Maybe he’s finally arrived.
