EU to Ban Gas-powered Cars by 2050?

It looks like the European Union intends to make a bold pledge to ban all diesel and gas-powered cars by the year 2050. This plan is expected to be part of the EU’s Roadmap on Transport which will also aim for a cut in gas-powered cars on the road by 50% by 2030.

The ambitious departure from fossil fuel reliance is expected to be achieved primarily through a focus on hybrid vehicles leading up to 2030 and then a more firm transition into purely electric vehicles by 2050. The focus will be on added reliance on mass transit that make use of these technologies, particularly in cities where they hope to get travelers to use mass transit 75% of the time.

If they meet their goals, the EU expects that Europe will see a 60% decrease in CO2 by 2050 despite the expected substantial increase in population.
