Biofuel Jet Could Go London to Tokyo in Two Hours
Whoa, Nelly! A passenger jet unveiled recently at the Paris Air Show boasts all of the following: biofuel-powered, hypersonic (3125 miles per hour, four times the speed of sound) and thus able to transport passengers relatively cleanly between London and Tokyo in just over two hours. By “relatively cleanly” we mean that the jet claims almost zero emissions. The plane, which is called the ZEHST (Zero Emission Hypersonic Transportation) is made by European plane manufacturer EADS (parent company of Airbus) The future may be now.
The plane would use conventional methods for takeoff, then fire up ramjet booster engines. That’s technology that’s used in missiles. Those engines would take the ZEHST to an altitude of thirty-two miles, which is just outside of the Earth’s atmosphere.

And before you freak out about biofuel for heavy-fuel use planes and the current state of the food shortage and global food prices, know that EADS has opted for a seaweed-based biofuel and then a mix of oxygen and water when above the atmosphere. All emissions would be shot into space, rather than the Earth’s atmosphere.
While speaking to reporters at the Paris Air Show, EADS innovation and technology director Jean Botti said, “It is not a Concorde but it looks like a Concorde. We have been working on this project for long enough now to know it is viable.”
EADS estimates that the first true demonstration flights could take place as early as 2020 and commercial service for between fifty and a hundred passengers could begin as early as 2050. That may seem far away, but take a moment to consider the technological leaps being made here.
But there’s seemingly not a lot of downside here. The fuel is clean, the transportation is fast, and emissions that are created are shot into space. Now, we’re not really sure what the karmic comeback of shooting things into space is, and we’re guessing it’s not really good, but we’re willing to take that chance.
