Bear Kills Cub, Self to Avoid Tortured Life
This is one of those stories that seems like a fictional nightmare, but in fact, it’s true. As we reported earlier this year, there is a thriving bear bile industry in Asia. Essentially, people cage bears, cut holes in their abdomens and drain their bile to be used in Chinese medicine. However, we’re recently read that a mother bear who was held captive at a bile farm in a remote area of North-West China seemingly decided to ensure her cub would not suffer a life of pain.

To get bile from the bears, workers cut a hole in the abdomen and gall bladder. The hole is never sealed, and as a result is often infected and painful. Bears in this condition will often try to hit themselves over and over again in the abdomen in an apparent suicide attempt. As a result, once the bears have holes cut into them, they are often fitted with an iron vest to prevent them from self harm.

In this case, a mother bear, upon hearing her cub cry in pain during the process of cutting a hole into this abdomen, broke out of the tiny “crush” cage she was held it, and ran towards her cub. Once she reached him, she apparently hugged him until he was strangled to death. She then dropped him, and ran head-first into a wall, killing herself.
While this is an absolutely awful story, it once again showcases that animals are thinking beings, and can make human-like decisions that go against our natural instinct of self-preservation.
