The Environmental Movement Ain’t What It Used To Be

As Canadian environmentalist Tim Murray said, “The environmental movement ain’t what it used to be.”

Why do you make that statement Mr. Murray?

“Once upon a time, Americans used to care about overpopulation,” said Murray. “Once upon a time it took the “P” in the IPAT equation seriously. Those were the days. The days when Paul Ehrlich used to appear over and over again on the Johnny Carson show, and the founders of the first “Earth Day” in 1970 worried about the environmental impact of mass immigration to the United States. These were environmentalists. The Real McCoy. Not the “nativists, bigots and xenophobes” which many green activists and leaders today characterize them as.

“But then something happened. The environmental movement was hijacked and given an ideological transfusion, and then big corporate money weighed in to confer its thanks upon those who did the dirty work. Two decades later and we can see the result. Exhibit A, from the RBSN (the Race-Baiting Smear Network), a document called “Take the Environmental Pledge”, produced by the Chicago-based “Center for New Community”, which repeats the tired Hartmannite theme of “The Greening of Hate”.

“I understand that this document was crafted recently— in May of 2011, but the arguments are old-hat and as wrong now as they were a decade ago. The assertion about urban sprawl being a result of bad land use planning is particularly conspicuous in its inaccuracy, but then, so are their accusations about racists-under-the-bed. Nevertheless, they form the basis of arguments waged against us (the so-called “Malthusians”) by the green-left—– a motley coalition of  feminists, left wing think tanks like “The Canadian Centre for Policy Alernatives” (CCPA), environmental orgs, “eco-socialists” and Marxists like Ian Angus of Climate Justice and Simon Butler of Green-Left Weekly, Commondreams.org (Commonhallucinations.org?), Avaaz.org, the Centre for New Community and the Southern Poverty Law Centre—among dozens of others.

“Mix in a teaspoon of environmental chic with a gallon of left wing identity politics, social ‘justice’ concerns, cultural relativism, White Guilt and Self-loathing and Voila!—The Environmental “Justice” Movement.  Forget peak oil, the depletion of non-renewables and  bio-diversity loss—— the exclusive focus must be upon ‘climate’ justice because it serves the twin  purpose of assigning blame to the rich and greedy and calling for a spirit of international cooperation and global ‘empathy’.

“Any demand to tighten borders would surely send out the wrong message to those whom we must welcome in recompense for our profligate ways and with whom we must work ‘together’ for a common solution.

“No matter what the problem—- be it sprawl, pollution, habitat loss, climate change, famine, epidemic, poverty—- the green-left will always say, in Hardin’s words, that “no one ever dies from overpopulation”. Case in point,  the local Sierra Club has invited Ben Parfitt of CCPA to come to my community this December to tell us, no doubt at some point, that we waste so much energy that we can reduce our energy footprint simply by life style changes and retrofits while growing our population ad infinitum. This is the environmental message that Sierra Club’s corporate donors love to hear. “Green growth”.

“What is emerging is an eclectic but coherent ideology of population denialism that draws from the kit bag of recycled, discredited New Left axioms. The approaching date of the 7th billion human this month has been a catalyst for a flurry of articles (and books) that are frenetic in their attempt to downplay the significance of this terrifying benchmark.  It seems that a lot of people are desperate to keep the growth machine alive and running—many of them carrying the banner of “progressive” causes.

“For a comprehensive understanding of how the “environmental justice” ideology evolved, read the classic history,  “Forsaking the Fundamentals” by Leon Kolankiewicz and Roy Beck. http://www.cis.org/articles/2001/forsaking/forsaking.pdf   Please, if you have not read this history, do so. All of its sections can be found on the Center for Immigration Studies website at http://www.cis.org/articles/2001/forsaking/release.html  It will make you realize why the contemporary environmental movement is blind to the threat of immigration-driven population growth.

“IMHO these people are a lost cause. Their neuro-circuitry is effed, set in cement. The whole lot of them would need to be sequestered for an intensive weekend of one-on-one deprogramming to be accessible to reason. You’d have an easier time deprogramming a Moonie than the typical “environmentalist”.  Tamper with their brains and a 120 decibel alarm would go off, “It is not how many of us there are that matters, but how we live….It is not how many of us there that matters but how we live….It is not how many of us there that matters but how we live…… It is not how many of us there are that matters but how we live…..,….. Live like Ghandi not like Gates.

“We will decouple our emissions from economic growth…..We will decouple our emissions from economic growth…..We will decouple our emissions from economic growth……..(the battery is running low now)……”

Tim Murray, www.immigrationwatchCanada.org , http://sinkinglifeboat.blogspot.com or http://biodiversityfirst.googlepages.com,  said, “I came upon an orchestration, the environmental movement, and all the musicians were playing violins to the tune of “Overconsumption, overconsumption, overconsumption.” They refused to play any other tune or use any other instrument to compliment that narrow repertoire. Apparently some corporate donors were paying them to be a one-trick pony.
