These Pictures May Give You Nightmares About The Canada Oil Sands

Robert Johnson — Business Insider

Canada’s economic boom depends on tearing up 54,000 square-mile of pristine Alberta wilderness.

Development of the world’s third largest oil supply is proceeding rapidly. It already represents a $3.5 billion annual paycheck to the Canadian government and 75,000 immediate jobs.

But many are aghast at the project, which is also the fastest growing source of greenhouse gas in Canada.

When you see the pictures, you may feel the same. We’re not saying the project is good or bad. We’re just saying the scale and severity of what’s happening in Alberta will make your spine tingle.

Business Insider sent me to Alberta in early May, when there was still ice on the ground and a bite in the air. I took these shots, trying to stay warm, from about 1,000 feet up, out of the window of a small plane.

The following pictures show oil mining, where the sand is dug from the ground and the oil’s separated through a lengthy and messy process. There are drilling sites in the oil sands, and those are highlighted in the photo essay at the end of this one.

To get a look at the oil sand mines, we rented this Cessna 172 which the pilot was allowed to bring down to 1,000 feet — from there, through the open window and with a long lens we were able to see what really goes on in one of the most controversial places on the planet

The Alberta oil sands are spread across more than 54,000 square miles but we’re taking a look at just a small part of that — the red line is an approximate outline of the entire deposit — the green is where we’ll be flying

But thousands flock here to make real money in the oil sands — where creating synthetic crude begins in the strip mine

This is how the oil sands have been harvested since 1967

There’s nothing there but barren land. Why not circulate it?

Until a realistic alternative to gasoline is found this is normal. What about volcanoes and earthquakes that do far more damage to the Planet and atmosphere?? Our activity is just as normal as the destruction Nature hands down, by comparison we are junior Boy Scouts. There have been several Mass Extinction events that dwarf anything Man could ever accomplish ecologically or otherwise so stop feeling guilty.

Hemp can be used as fuel and it grows very, very fast! It is a highly renewable resource and can be used for cloth, fuel, biodegradable strong plastics, health benefits including cancer cure, etc. Look it up, it is highly beneficial… there are alternatives to some of what we are using today.

Gosh, thats fine coming from Mr Cessna…complaing about producing fuel and documenting the tragedy while guzzling fuel in a Cessna. Betcha he drives his turbo Saab 60 miles to the Sierra Club meetings to whine about co2.

OMG , What a shame, People sure know how to ruin a good thing. In the army we were told to leave an area better than we found it.

As an American living in Alberta, I have personal experience with the oil sands. All I can say is do not believe every thing you read. The oil sands works closely with the native community in putting back the land, (to as close as they can) to what it was before they started. I’m not saying that I agree with the entire oil sands project. However I feel I must give credit where credit is due. No the land will never be what it use to be, but in a lot of cases it turns out to be better than it was in the first place. Most of the land the oil sands lies upon is just brush & swamp land that was not of any use to the first nations people who live there. Before the oil sands project the first nations people could only use the land for a limited amount of trapping of small animals. They, the first nations people, (Indians as we call them) lived in total poverty as unlike the other first nations tribes this tribe had no treaty with the federal government or the Queen, so they were forced to work for a living. And being native they choose not to seek out ways to make their lives better. Now due to the oil sands they have their own government, and their community is a lot better off because of it.

Looks to me like just another strip mine. If we want the stuff, we have to dig it up, so whats the big deal?

I love it when people condemn such operations while simultaneously incorporating the product into virtually all aspects of their lives. Author should get off the pedestal and consider where the energy for his entire lifestyle comes from. Truth is none of it is pretty if you want to look at it with a purely environmental eye. Including all the materials and means used to post the article.

      • Tabbbytha

Of course they do… whenever people say they want the technology changed they are ignored, but oil has become deeply ingrained into our society’s workings and though there are alternatives, the businesses involved refuse to change or allow other alternatives whatsoever… So people ARE saying they don’t want it, but are being blatantly ignored. If we were to stop oil cold turkey with a public totally ignorant to the (hidden/played down/ fought against tooth and nail) alternatives, it wouldn’t be pretty. There are alternatives and if people can simply start to use them, government and businesses be damned in their forced resistance of them, then maybe we can start to get somewhere.

Research alternatives… and follow them as best you can. We don’t have to just accept everything we are told we must accept… if we know the information and the thing we are being pushed to accept is wrong, don’t follow it. The only thing stopping us society-wise is our refusal to risk anything, our refusal to stand up for anything… Non-Compliance (Don’t riot or harm anyone or anything, follow positive actions don’t do anything harmful. Simply do what you know to be right).

That’s not strip mining, that’s commerce. That’s life, food on the table. A job and a paycheck to more for a man’s soul than all the chanting at crystals and baying at the full moon ever can. Man is the eternal spirit on an eternal journey – the earth, all of the earth, is at our disposal to use at will. Gentlemen, start your engines.

      • Tabbbytha

The earth is not here just for our amusement and use. In case you haven’t noticed there are billions of other life forms on it. I would rather try to NOT harm other living things if I can help it… I understand we need to take things from the earth to use to live but to simply walk over every other living thing with the egotistical assumption that’s it’s all ours and screw every other creature is a terrible attitude to take! Also very dangerous. Also, a paycheck is NOT the be all end all…. Selling one’s integrity, dignity, honor, conscious and morality for a simple pay check degrades society and people ought to seriously stop doing it if they want the world, and society, to be in a healthy state in the future… Lying, cheating, deception, stepping on and over others to get what you want is the way of big business these days… how is THAT something to be proud of, or how does that kind of dealing at the economic level create a society that is stable or civilized?

Stop selling out, those of you who find that you have done so. Some people find far more happiness in following their hearts and their consciousness (and some also with crystals and moon-baying) that with a simple paycheck. Both ways of living are fine, as long as you live in a society that is not corrupted. Otherwise you’re cheating yourself, friends and family in the end.

That heart on your sleeve is dribbling all over the place. Sorry to seem so out of touch up here on my perch. You see I have been working my butt off for 25 years becoming one of those who signs the front of paychecks, not the back.

      nope no nightmares yet

or a pic of Hillary Clinton would do it

This article is nothing more than environmentalist/communist propaganda. Where do you want to get your oil from? Canada or Saudi Arabia…that bastion of freedom, liberty and religious tolerance.
