Why are field tests of Golden Rice necessary?
Field tests and other evaluations help us determine how Golden Rice will grow in the field and if it will have any environmental impacts different from other rice varieties.
Many years of work in greenhouses and screenhouses have shown that Golden Rice grows the same as other rice. This has been confirmed by small confined field tests recently carried out by IRRI and the Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice).
PhilRice is now leading larger field tests in different locations in the Philippines to see how Golden Rice grows in different environments – including those similar to typical farm conditions – and to compare any environmental impacts of Golden Rice with those of other rice varieties. Grain produced from the field tests will be used in other crop and food safety assessments. These evaluations are all part of national regulatory requirements in the Philippines, which are based on internationally established procedures, to determine the safety of genetically modified crops.
Also, as with other new rice varieties, detailed information about how Golden Rice grows will be gathered during the field evaluations, including plant growth and development, insect activity, and plant disease ratings. All rice varieties go through these assessments before they can be approved for official release, such as commercial release by the National Seed Industry Council in the Philippines.
