Incredible Map Shows Vanishing Land Due To Rising Ocean

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Sea levels are rising faster than expected from global warming, and University of Colorado geologist Bill Hay has a good idea why. The last official IPCC report in 2007 projected a global sea level rise between 0.2 and 0.5 meters by the year 2100. But current sea-level rise measurements meet or exceed the high end of that range and suggest a rise of one meter or more by the end of the century.

Past and possible future changes in sea level.
Map by Emanuel Soeding, Christian-Albrechts University, using U.S. National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration Click here for larger map.

“What’s missing from the models used to forecast sea-level rise are critical feedbacks that speed everything up,” says Hay. He will be presenting some of these feedbacks in a talk on Sunday, 4 Nov., at the meeting of The Geological Society of America in Charlotte, North Carolina, USA.

One of those feedbacks involves Arctic sea ice, another the Greenland ice cap, and another soil moisture and groundwater mining.

“There is an Arctic sea ice connection,” says Hay, despite the fact that melting sea ice — which is already in the ocean — does not itself raise sea level. Instead, it plays a role in the overall warming of the Arctic, which leads to ice losses in nearby Greenland and northern Canada. When sea ice melts, Hay explains, there is an oceanographic effect of releasing more fresh water from the Arctic, which is then replaced by inflows of brinier, warmer water from the south.

“So it’s a big heat pump that brings heat to the Arctic,” says Hay. “That’s not in any of the models.” That warmer water pushes the Arctic toward more ice-free waters, which absorb sunlight rather than reflect it back into space like sea ice does. The more open water there is, the more heat is trapped in the Arctic waters, and the warmer things can get.

Then there are those gigantic stores of ice in Greenland and Antarctica. During the last interglacial period, sea level rose 10 meters due to the melting of all that ice — without any help from humans. New data suggests that the sea-level rise in the oceans took place over a few centuries, according to Hay.

“You can lose most of the Greenland ice cap in a few hundred years, not thousands, just under natural conditions,” says Hay. “There’s no telling how fast it can go with this spike of carbon dioxide we are adding to the atmosphere.”

This possibility was brought home this last summer as Greenland underwent a stunning, record-setting melt. The ice streams, lubricated by water at their base, are speeding up.

Hay notes, “Ten years ago we didn’t know much about water under the Antarctic ice cap.” But it is there, and it allows the ice to move — in some places even uphill due to the weight of the ice above it.

“It’s being squeezed like toothpaste out of a tube,” explains Hay. The one thing that’s holding all that ice back from emptying into the sea is the grounded ice shelves acting like plugs on bottles at the ends of the coastal glaciers. “Nobody has any idea how fast that ice will flow into the oceans once the ice shelves are gone.”

Another missing feedback is the groundwater being mined all over the world to mitigate droughts. That water is ultimately added to the oceans (a recent visualization of this effect in the U.S. was posted by NASA’s Earth Observatory: http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/IOTD/view.php?id=79228).

All of these are positive feedbacks speeding up the changes in climate and sea-level rise.

“You would expect negative feedbacks to creep in at some point,” says Hay. “But in climate change, every feedback seems to go positive.” The reason is that Earth’s climate seems to have certain stable states. Between those states things are unstable and can change quickly. “Under human prodding, the system wants to go into a new climate state.”

Didn’t read it all. The original premise being so flawed that the subsequent attempt to justify itself would not be worth the effort.

The IPCC! Don’t we ALL now know that the IPCC fudged it’s data to fulfill a political objective.

The oceans have pretty much fallen about 5mm or 3/16″ for each of the last 2 years. Ask the folk who measure such stuff.

Don’t ask me for proof. Prove me wrong. :!:

    • Jmantaylor

Hmm. Something funny here. The article says a sea level rise of .5 meters yet the map shows water covering towns with elevations of 30 meters or more. .5 meters would not even cover the Outer Banks of NC. Looks like a con.

    • Ranger_Ric

Bogus BS global warming crap. Go away hoaxer, nobody is buying the global warming BS anymore!

    • JediTexan

Al Gore tells us unless we pay him a carbon tax the sea levels will rise and destroy the coastal regions but he still buys ocean front property. That should be a big clue.

The oceans aren’t rising. Just another global warming lie.

    • Anonymous

The oceans aren’t rising; The land is SINKING! We’re all gonna die!!!!!

    • Real Expert

Hmm, I live right on the ocean and I have detected no rise in the water. If anything, it’s
been down a tad bit for the last month straight excluding the normal high tides (which
are less than normal). Isn’t it funny how they just throw the premise out in front of you
and put some fictional map in your face? I live right in part of this map area and it is just
not happening in any way, shape or form! I have to agree with middle-aged Mayhem, the
levels have dropped over the past 2 years.

The brainiac scientists don’t seem to understand that even if there was global warming,
that the ice is already displaced and sea rise would be negligible at best. In other words
if you have ice in a glass of water, just because the ice in it melts does not mean that the
glass is going to overflow right? All ice in the oceans in ice packs etc.. are not going to
change the water level in the sea, as they are already displacing it. Now if glaciers melt,
they will add to the water level of the sea, but not by feet, but perhaps inches.

Dear Scientists.. The other planets are heating up as well as ours does from time to time.
It is not from human interaction that our planet warms.. but is a cyclical thing.
Scaremongering the public into believing we are causing it is just a crime. I think all of you
need to further Al Gore’s cash cow and send him more of your money.. He is already a
billionaire thanks to people such as you! Please send him more of your money so you
don’t have to feel guilty about a warming (actually cooling at this time) planet. He laughs
all of the way to the bank at your expense.. The additional carbon taxes put onto the
population in some countries is a crime against humanity. These snake oil salesmen (and
women) should be prosecuted and put away.

One volcano puts out more carbon into the atmosphere than everything man has put
into it since the industrial revolution! Termites put out more gases into the atmosphere
then all of mankind does (fact). It is just silly and arrogant to think that we can change
the planets atmosphere in any real major way.. The earth itself generates more greenhouse
gases (even if we were not on the planet) than mankind ever could. If anything we
actually suppress the natural cycles of gases, by putting out forest fires etc..
So, unless we had the ability to stop volcanoes from going off (lots of them these days),
and we killed off all termites, and stopped each fire, we are just kidding ourselves into
thinking we can control the atmosphere and stop greenhouse gasses.. If we had no
carbon dioxide, we would have no plant life.. No plant life, no oxygen.. No oxygen no
people, or animals of any kind. Are you sure you want to suppress carbon dioxide?
C’mon put on your thinking cap! If you do, please send Al Gore your money.. And
let us see what he has done with your money!

Whoever submitted this article needs to do a little bit more studying and quit listening
to the thieves who are making energy costs go out of reach for little old people all over
the world.. They end up freezing to death because they can’t afford fuel oil, or electricity.
So when you spill this crap out, remember that YOU are affecting people’s lives, and
some of them are dying as a result. It’s your conscience that has to live with “what
happens”, when you spread this stuff around. Next time you see when people die
in heat or cold, remember that not every person can afford the “new” energy prices.
Just like the prez said before going into office..”Energy prices will necessarily skyrocket
under my administration”.. Yep, he is right about that one. And every year people who
can’t afford those prices ends up paying with their lives.. So quit with the global warming
stuff and understand that we are but spec’s on a planet. Sure we don’t need to be
foolish about what we do, and conserve when necessary, but keep it real folks..
Understand that the warmists have one agenda.. To make money off of your fears,
and to sell you fear on a grand scale, so you will part with your cash.

    • nimbunje

the ice age will return after the next sea level rise-so don’t worry because AGW has prevented that-ha ha

      • Pix

        Nicely spotted.

    • Anonymous

The map is of Past and possible future changes in sea level. It’s BS
Nice to see all this opposition to the global warming lie!

    • Pix

LOL, The sea levels have been steadily rising since the end of the last ice age c10’000 years ago. If where you live can’t stand a few inches of sea level rise, then you’re not going to survive a 1 ft flood from minor storm surges. let alone a hurrican storm surge.

The ice in the Arctic didn’t melt during the extended warmer than now period between 6’000 to 1’000 BCE and it survived the warmer than now Medieval period. If it didn’t melt then, why would it melt now when it’s colder than it was?

The ice in the Antarctic won’t melt unless the temperature there gains 20c, because it’s that much colder there. So the claim of a total melt is complete BS. Just like Global warming is BS, because there is no such thing as a Global climate.

      Pure BS

As long as the oceans cover the author of the post, I’l good with it.

“Incredible Map Shows Vanishing Land Due To Rising Ocean” What? What is incredible about this? This is at best idiotic. Some ‘global warming fool’ a horses a$$ played with the computer maps. Where is the “Incredible” in these unsubstantiated conjectures? Where is the “Incredible” in hollow hype? Use your brains people, do your own research.

    • Patriot

Progressives complain that people are afraid of change.
Well, here is change — a type of change that’s happened many times before over the eons — and they are fear-mongering about it like there’s no hope. Yet, the earth is still here, & so are the people – more than ever.
So, we need to see reality & the upsides of this. For one, we damned up so many rivers, their silt doesn’t rebuild the deltas & coastlines anymore. That can be remedied, right? We also must remember that the earth has been warmer previously, with less polar ice, AND people did make a lot of homes & cities right on the coastline — that’s not nature’s fault, but ours! Be adaptable, ye cavemen, or you cannot survive, lol. Pull back, go north & south to the new lands devoid of ice & with newly thawed places for crops & homes, etc. It is simply a changing map just like the political map has changed over the years, too.

Haha, it’s great to see not one responder buys this BS post. The beaches here are all the same as ever. The towns are only just above sea level on the coast here and nothing has changed. This poster still thinks CO2 warms the atmosphere. What an idiot. CO2 is the only harmless part of emissions. Where’s the radiation tax? Why is Al Gore silent about Fukushima? Why is he silent about all dangerous chemicals? He’s just distracting everyone from the real issues by demonising something not just harmless but essential to life in this carbon based world. All tv hosts in Oz seem to believe it 100%. Not many in the public do. You can recognize the evil ones and the fools who believe such utter nonsense.
