Recent Natural Disasters
- Tropical Cyclone Nilam
-Tropical Cyclone Nilam made landfall at Mahaballipuram at about 4.30 pm today. Mahaballipuram is a town in Kancheepuram district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.
-About 3,800 people evacuated in Mahaballipuram. Evacuated people are living in 19 relief camps.
-Danger signals ranging from seven to five have been issued at Chennai, Ennore, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, and Puducherry ports.
-A holiday has been declared for educational institutions in Chittoor and Nellore districts.
-Sri Lanka on Monday evacuated people from its northern coast. But later on cyclone “Nilam” changed its path towards the south Indian coast of Tamil Nadu.
-Following weather officials, the sea condition will be rough along and off Tamilnadu, Puducherry and Aandra Pradesh coasts during the next 36 hour. The MET department has predicted extremely heavy rainfall of over 25 cm or more in north coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry (Photo Nilam damage on Nungambakkam High Road, Chennai). 06:50 UTC (local time Wednesday, October 31, 2012 at 03:50 PM @ epicenter) - M 4.2 light shallow earthquake in Iran-Pakistan border region (@ 18 km depth) with epicenter located 87 km SW Saravan. Weak shaking will have felt by the people of Iranshahr.
