Natural Disasters List December 11, 2012- Republic of Congo floods kill 13

Recent Natural Disasters

• Flooding in Republic of Congo
  -Thirteen killed in Republic of Congo floods. Floods destroyed several houses in southern Brazzaville.
  -Following Red Cross official atleast 13 bodies have been recovered. Laurel Kihounzou, mayor of the southern Brazzaville district of Makelekele said at least 26 people were injured.
  -Floods destroyed several houses after a river in the Makelekele bursts its bank.
  -Around 600 people are currently lving in emergency shelters.
  -Tens of thousands of people were severely affected by flooding in northern Congo-Brazzaville as the Congo River bursts its banks in November 1999 (Photo: Flooding in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, 2007, AFP).

• Landslide in Sukabumi, Indonesia
  -One killed in landslide in Sukabumi, West Java, Indonesia. Twentyone others are reported to be missing.
  -Torrential rain triggered a landslide at the mountainous site in Sukabumi.
  -They were collecting trace amounts of gold at the illegal mine in Sukabumi.

• Cold wave in Olintepeque, Guatemala
  -Two killed due to cold wave in Olintepeque city of Guatemala.
  -The Conred emergency response agency, Guatemala has made shelters to provide homeless people with a refuge from the cold. More than 500 people are currently living in the shelter.

• M 4.8 moderate deep earthquake in  Izu Islands, Japan Region (@ 136 km depth) with epicenter located 269 km S of Hachijo-jima. It will have faintly felt by the people of Shimoda, Oyama and Tateyama.

• M 5.1 modeate earthquake in Vanuatu with epicenter located 149 km SSW of Port-Vila. Just a weak shaking of MMI II-III will have felt by the people of We, Dumbea and Paita (New Caledonia).

• M 4.4 light earthquake in Taiwan (@ 27 km depth) with epicenter located just 6 km ENE of Hualian. Just a weak shaking of MMI II-III will have felt by the people of Su’ao,  Buli and Yilan.

• M 5.8 strong sea quake in Molucca Sea (@ 30 km depth) with epicenter located 126 km W of Kota Ternate. People of Ternate, Tondano, Bitung, Laikit, Laikit II (Dimembe), Tomohon, Manado and Tobelo.

• M 4.8 moderate earthquake in Owen Fracture Zone Region (@ 10 km depth) with epicenter located 315 km NE of Tamrida. Just a weak shaking will have felt by the people of Salalah (Oman).

• M 5.1 moderate earthquake in Northern Yukon Territory, Canada with epicenter located 101 km NW of Fort McPherson. It will have faintly felt in coastal area.

Recent Flash Floods
Ongoing Major River Floods (Based on Satellite observation): Afghanistan (Amu Darya), Australia (Darling), Bolivia (Madre de Dios), Brazil (Tocantins), Chad (N Djamena), China (Mekong and Huang He), Democratic Republic of the Congo (Ubangi), Dominican Republic, Honduras, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq (Shatt al Arab and Tigris), Kenya (Tana), Philippines, Sudan (Blue Nile, White Nile), Syria (Euphrates), Tanzania. 

• Flooding in Durban, South Africa
  -Seven people are reported to be missing in flooding in the Umzinto River, near Durban.
  -Three people were rescued from iFafa Club Marina Resort, south of Umzinto. Other nine homeless people were also rescued from the flooded Umbilo River in Durban today morning.

Erupting Volcanoes: Fuego, Santiago, Poas, Reventador, Nyiragongo, Ol Doniyo Lengai, Raung, Erta Ale, Paluweh, Gamalama, Batu Tara, Sakurajima, Manam, Ulawun, Tolbachik and Kilauea volcano.

• Russia/Plosky Tolbachik recent volcanic activity
  -Russia’s Plosky Tolbachik volcano located far eastern Kamchatka peninsula is spilling a record 1,200 tonnes of lava every second.

Recent Tropical Cyclones

• Tropical Cyclone Claudia
  -As of 12:00 UTC, TC Claudia was located 680 nm south of Diego Garcia.
  -NASA’s Aqua satellite indicates that Claudia’s eye is about 10 nautical miles wide.

Natural Disaster News

• Tornado in Louisiana and Alabama, USA
  -EF1 tornado touched down in Baker. Tornado destroyed several buildings in Ascension Parish.
  -A tornado with maximum winds estimated at 90 mph hit Birmingham, Alabama.
  -Strong wind damaged 40 houses near Edgewater, Volusia County (Florida) between Edgewater and Oak Hill.
