Should We Humans Feel Guilty For Overpopulating This Planet?

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

By Frosty Wooldridge

Recently, one of my ardent readers said, “Humans should not feel guilty about living on Earth.…”  He defended humanity’s overpopulation running roughshod over the planet and the oceans. He defended that humans own the right to reproduce themselves forever without end into eternity. He argued that we can add another 20, 30 and 40 billion people to the planet without consequences.  He felt that our causing the extinction of over 100 species daily cannot be our concern. He lacks any moral compunction or sense of responsibility toward our fellow life-forms.  He denied that human carbon footprint creates climate destabilization.  He advocates for unlimited population growth.  In other words: he lacks the intellectual horsepower to understand his own dilemma.  Another way to put it: dumb as a box of doorknobs.

A hundred years ago, Alfred Whitehead in his “Adventures of Ideas”, made a statement that spelled out a logical path for the advancement of the human race:  “The foundation of all understanding…is that no static maintenance of perfection is possible.  This axiom is rooted in the nature of life.  Advance or decay are the only choices offered humanity.  The pure conservative is fighting against the essence of the universe.”

Whitehead said that we must change our thinking to fit new realities. We must take Galileo’s new understandings that the Earth no longer enjoys the universe revolving around it, but in fact, our planet remains a speck in the black void of the universe.  This planet remains finite with a finite carrying capacity.  Humans, to be sure, need to get a clue that they are not God’s gift to the world.  In fact, Shim Shimmel, the renowned artist said, “With creatures like human beings, even the stars aren’t safe.”

With more intelligent Americans surveyed recently, they were asked the question: Do Americans think stabilizing population will help protect the environment? Fifty-four percent believe stabilization will.

As Steve Kurtz said, “Nothing on Earth happens in a vacuum. It’s a closed system that begins to buckle under the sheer weight of human demands. Scientists are increasingly linking population growth and overconsumption to our environmental challenges.”

With my six continents of bicycle travel, I unequivocally understand and have seen firsthand that human overpopulation accelerates as the single greatest and most dangerous issue facing humanity and all life on this planet in the 21st century.

In just the past few months’ scientists have found in America:

• The Colorado River system is under assault by a growing population, and there are serious doubts it can meet the West’s demand for water in the coming decades.

• Florida’s aquifer, the water supply for 19 million people, is experiencing saltwater intrusion because of over-pumping.

• The United States will lose 36 million acres of forest to urban sprawl by 2050.

• Sixty-six species of coral should be classified as endangered because population and consumption of resources are a driving factor in the threats they face.

• The Gunnison sage grouse merits endangered-species protection in part because the human population has doubled in its habitat and will double again in the next 20 years.

• Florida panthers experienced the second year in a row of record-breaking road kills deaths due to increased traffic and development in panther habitat.

·         According to the Department of Interior, because of human encroachment, we lose 2,500 plants and animals to extinction in North America every decade. That number will accelerate as we race toward an added 138 million by 2050 and 625 million by the end of the century.

“Upwards of two hundred species.. .mostly of the large, slow-breeding variety.. are becoming extinct here every day because more and more of the earth’s carrying capacity is systematically being converted into human carrying capacity. These species are being burnt out, starved out, and squeezed out of existence.. .thanks to technologies that most people, I’m afraid, think of as technologies of peace. I hope it will not be too long before the technologies that support our population explosion begin to be perceived as no less hazardous to the future of life on this planet than the endless production of radioactive wastes.” Daniel Quinn

What’s going on with our oceans defies and frightens even the “hardest” mentality: 100 million sharks killed annually for the past 20 years.  Species extinction rates blowing off the charts.  Acidification of the oceans so many life forms will go extinct including our reefs.  Plastic devastation like the Great Pacific Garbage Patch killing millions of marine and avian creatures annually. Over 20,000 square mile dead zones at the mouths of rivers around the world running raw sewage laden with chemicals 24/7.   The list multiplies as we multiply.

Americans get it and our leaders need to get it and we all need to understand that we cannot stand around with our noses stuck to a TV set.  We need to participate in our future and the future of our children.

The poll asked: if mass extinctions of plants and animals were unavoidable due to population growth, do we have a moral responsibility to address the problem? Sixty percent said “Yes!”

We’re not overpopulating the planet. That’s a lie right from Satan who wants to kill and destroy. The population of developed countries would be declining except for immigration from third world countries. Once infant deaths decline so does the birthrate. Except in Muslim countries.

      from the American Thinker:

One of the frequent cries of many on the left is that the world is overpopulated. The latest hysterical outburst on this matter came from Sir David Attenborough, a recent patron of “The Optimum Population Trust.” The 86-year-old Attenborough, who has a degree in natural sciences and is a former senior manager of the BBC, is a high priest among earth-worshiping liberals.
Attenborough, famous mostly for his Life documentaries, declared, “We are a plague on the Earth. It’s coming home to roost over the next 50 years or so. It’s not just climate change; it’s sheer space, places to grow food for this enormous horde. Either we limit our population growth or the natural world will do it for us[.]”
Nothing could be farther from the truth. When it comes to “sheer space” and “places to grow food,” we have barely touched what the earth has available. Given that the earth contains just north of 7 billion people, the entire population of the planet could easily fit into the state of Texas, which contains less than 0.14% of the earth’s land area.
The overpopulation myth has been around for decades. It even predates the holy grail of modern liberal environmental orthodoxy: global warming. With liberals today, the overpopulation myth (as with most everything even remotely tied to the environment) is typically predicated upon the myth of man-made global warming.
As an illustration of this, the Grand Mystic Royal Noble of the Ali Baba Temple of the Church of Global Warming — Al Gore — recently tweeted: “In the next 17 years, [the population] of the global middle class will grow by 3 [billion] people. How will we accommodate them on a finite planet?”
Noble (or “Nobel”) Al is so concerned about the prospect of man-made global warming that to reduce the amount of hot air radiating from the U.S., he sold his media company (Current Media) to the Al Jazeera Media Network. This would have been a smart move for Noble Al, except for the fact that Al Jazeera is a state-owned media corporation.
And it’s owned by not just any state, but in fact by the extremely oil rich monarchy that is Qatar. Now, it is not so surprising that a liberal such as Noble Al sold himself out (for about $100 million) to a media corporation that former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld called a “mouthpiece of al Qaeda and a vehicle of anti-American propaganda.” Neither is it surprising that Noble Al would enrich himself by doing business with an authoritarian regime.
What is surprising is that Ali Baba Al would enrich himself with oil money. Not only that, but filthy oil money (by Ali Baba Al standards). At about 44 metric tons per person (2009 numbers), Qatar has had the highest per-capita carbon dioxide emissions in the world for decades, and it’s not even close. Qatar has about 50% more per capita emissions that the next-highest nation and has more than double the U.S. per-capita carbon dioxide emissions (17.2 metric tons).
In addition to all of this, Qatar is rather “overpopulated.” Its population density of 394 people per square mile (compared to 89 per square mile in the U.S.) puts it at 76 (out of 243) on the list of sovereign states and dependent territories by population density.
Of course, to limit populations, one must reduce the number of newborns. This leads to another pillar of liberalism: abortion. In order to preach such hedonism to the world, the U.N. gave us World Population Day, where they boldly declare, “The human enterprise has outgrown the planet.”
The Russians sure seem to believe it. A recent Drudge headline reveals that instead of elevating a murderous dictator to reduce the population, the Russians have fully prostrated themselves at the bloody altar of abortion. In the Motherland, “abortion is rampant,” says Jonathan V. Last, author of What to Expect When No One’s Expecting.
Noting what is perhaps “the most grisly statistic the world has ever seen,” Last points out that in Russia, for every 10 live births, there are 13 abortions. Yet Russia is 223 in population density. Combine this with a paltry birthrate of 12.6 per 1,000, and the Russians are staring at a devastating population decline. “No nation has experienced long-term prosperity in the face of contracting population,” concludes Last.
Liberal myths abound: the world is overpopulated, fossil fuels are heating the planet, abortion is a “right,” homosexuality is normal and healthy, all life “evolved,” marriage can be redefined, a nation can spend its way out of debt, and so on. Notice the similarities? Each of these is a relatively recent conclusion once unheard of or (even worse) thought absurd and wicked.
Such it is with post-modern liberalism. Thinking themselves masters of science and reason, and ignoring absolute truth, liberals have become what they despise: “the faithful.”

Unfortunately, this writer with no name does not know what he is talking about. He lacks the intellectual horsepower or experience to understand the basic of what Galileo tried to tell the Pope in the 1600s. Today, such people still think the Earth is flat and at the center of the universe. We possess ample proof beyond a shadow of a doubt that humanity is wrecking the environmental systems that allow life to thrive. This responder remains dull to that reality.
If we don’t halt population growth with justice and compassion, it will be done for us by nature, brutally and without pity – and will leave a ravaged world. ~Nobel Laureate Dr. Henry W. Kendall

“The raging monster upon the land is population growth. In its presence, sustainability is but a fragile theoretical construct. To say, as many do, that the difficulties of nations are not due to people, but to poor ideology and land-use management is sophistic.” Harvard scholar and biologist E.O. Wilson

“Unlimited population growth cannot be sustained; you cannot sustain growth in the rates of consumption of resources. No species can overrun the carrying capacity of a finite land mass. This Law cannot be repealed and is not negotiable.” Dr. Albert Bartlett, http://www.albartlett.org , University of Colorado, USA.

“Most Western elites continue urging the wealthy West not to stem the migrant tide [that adds 80 million net gain annually to the planet], but to absorb our global brothers and sisters until their horrid ordeal has been endured and shared by all—ten billion humans packed onto an ecologically devastated planet.” Dr. Otis Graham, Unguarded Gates

Lester Brown, author of Plan B 4.0 Saving Civilization said, “The world has set in motion environmental trends that are threatening civilization itself. We are crossing environmental thresholds and violating deadlines set by nature. Nature is the timekeeper, but we cannot see the clock.”

“Somehow, we have come to think the whole purpose of the economy is to grow, yet growth is not a goal or purpose. The pursuit of endless growth is suicidal.” David Suzuki

O god its actually you, are you posting here because rense has slowed the rate of your alarmist articles? I really wish websites would label your articles better because we’re all tired of hearing it.

Earths overpopulation has been debated and debunked countless times. Theres even professors just a few days ago saying that the majority of species on earth haven’t even been discovered yet.

I’m sure though that evolution allows for no species to eventually suffer and die off. no the earth will always stay pristine and in balance, because we’re all incredibly old and have watched life on planet earth evolve for millenia right frosty?

All over pop alarmists and enviro terrorists should jump into the same flaming pit.

    • Truth1

Good post with sobering facts. We all are learning a lesson the First Nation ppls knew and could’ve taught us: if you don’t respect Mother Earth then she will not respect you. They understood how crucial it was to live in harmony with their surroundings.

Today’s abrahamic logic of unchecked reproduction to increase population such as employed by muslims will eventually destroy us all. They don’t care about the millions of people they enforced their religion upon who to this day suffer from its consequences, they are content to see millions live in poverty, misery and without freedoms and rights just so they can boast of being the largest religion and so that sharia rules the day. Creative thinking is anathema to them because they are programmed to do as their books tell them to. There is no freedom of thought or respect to their environment unless it is sanctioned by sharia. They have very little standards.

I think they’re the most dangerous because of their aggressiveness. Other ppl who have had their culture ripped from them and are now suffering the consequences like Mexican hispanics, can easily be educated and made to accept their native values once again. And they’re nowhere near as hostile. But for muslims unchecked reproduction will continue.

India also has a major problem which they refuse to even acknowledge. Instead, they’re sending a ship into space to show off whilst 900 million of their people live in poverty and ignorance. Will their population growth decline anytime soon? I really worry about the coming yrs as more and more Indians immigrate and make an already bad situation worse. Not only will they be competing for jobs and resources, but they’ll bring with them their backward social norms and values; there’s bound to be clashes and major new problems & they’re already happening. This is also true for mid eastern muslim and black immigrants. Libs of course want us to believe that it’s all working out.

So basically what we have: groups with their own agendas for power and control who are ignorant of their impact and refuse to restrain their greed. No one cares about any of the things you mentioned here about the decline of American resources. They’re only concerned with $ and power. I guess they’ll learn the hard way.

I’m thinking of moving to South America or a secluded European spot like Andorra. Maybe even Russia.

    • Louis

The world is not even close to being overpopulated. Furthermore, you are not God. He, not you, will decide if and when the world becomes overpopulated.

Frosty, you are an idiot. And using the name “Frosty” makes you a double idiot.

      • Truth1

You’re the idiot. Just because there is space/geographical location doesn’t mean the world isn’t overpopulated. There is a lack of resources plus the massive problem of pollution and growing waste that affects what our Earth can do for us. To say nothing of the current social problems on top of past ones that have yet to be resolved, and will multiply to the nth degree as populations expand and relocate.

Basic ecology tell us introduction of new organisms and changes in environment ALWAYS result in effects on the original population. THen it all snowballs from there.

Many nations including the so-called ‘one to watch’ India has population problems.

      • Frosty Wooldridge

Once again no-name shows his lack of intellectual horsepower. You’re the kind of minute mind that cannot put two and two together to understand the answer. You’re ineducable.
The green revolution was instigated as a result of the efforts of Norman Borlaug, who, while accepting the Nobel peace prize in 1970, said: “The green revolution has won a temporary success in man’s war against hunger and deprivation; it has given man a breathing space. If fully implemented, the revolution can provide sufficient food for sustenance during the next three decades. But the frightening power of human reproduction must also be curbed; otherwise the success of the green revolution will be ephemeral only.”

“The cheap oil age created an artificial bubble of plentitude for a period not much longer than a human lifetime….so I hazard to assert that as oil ceases to be cheap and the world reserves move toward depletion, we will be left with an enormous population…that the ecology of the earth will not support. The journey back toward non-oil population homeostasis will not be pretty. We will discover the hard way that population hyper growth was simply a side-effect of the oil age. It was a condition, not a problem with a solution. That is what happened and we are stuck with it.” James Howard Kunstler, The Long Emergency

“We must alert and organize the world’s people to pressure world leaders to take specific steps to solve the two root causes of our environmental crises – exploding population growth and wasteful consumption of irreplaceable resources. Over-consumption and overpopulation underlie every environmental problem we face today.” Jacques-Yves Cousteau, Oceanographer

        • Malaki

Ah so now we’re taking population lessons from an oceanographer. And better a book writer, this long emergency, that was written by a man who got his bachelors in… get this.. theater.

Its amazing that you call someone an idiot while reading a book on population by someone who studied theater in school. O frosty you’re even worse than I ever thought you were on rense.

    • KingOfTheCamp

The world can sustain more people, & theirs enough land & water to do what needs to be done, now if you wanna talk about corporate greed, then we have a whole different story, If you wanna talk about how the governments of the world posion everything, then we have a different story. If you wanna talk about how the G20 keeps the rich rich & the poor poor, well then we have a different story.

Its not humanity that is destroying the planet, Its government, profit margins & exploitation thats destroying the planet.

Humanity expanded to other continents here on earth & the next step is looking to the immediate solar system, Say Mars for example to expand the species their as well, I think with all the money the governments spend on warfare could easily accomplish this task in my lifetime.

      • Malaki

Don’t tell that to frosty whose got his nose so deep in bad info that he’ll never find his way out.

he thinks this guy http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Howard_Kunstler is someone you should be getting your population facts from.

Jaywill, KOS and now Frosty, BIN sure has some clowns.

    • WTFU

Question for Frosty…”Will you be the first to put your hand up to be culled.?”.
Ok,so we got a problem with over population, the Christians say cull the Muslams,Blacks say the whites and the Left suggests the right but NOBODY is going to put their hand up to be first.

The truth is that no human has the moral right to decide,it’s a personal choice for one to decide.

I take it nobody here has decided.

      • Frosty Wooldridge

WTFU, if we fail to use birth control and we fail to bring down our numbers gracefully with birth control, Mother Nature will do it for us very efficiently and brutally.

If we don’t halt population growth with justice and compassion, it will be done for us by nature, brutally and without pity – and will leave a ravaged world. ~Nobel Laureate Dr. Henry W. Kendall

        • Malaki

Seeing as they gave obeezy the nobel I wouldn’t put quotes up from them like they’re immaculate gods anymore. Stuffing your articles with quotes from journal writers and science fiction novelists doesn’t help your case.

If someones spent their whole life studying something and came to find that it wasn’t true would they…

          A. Come out and say they’ve made a mistake? Lose funding and become a nobody.

          or

          B. Come out and continue to drum the same beat? Another grant for research? Sounds great.

Because academics and science has been only truthful when it comes to the details, it has nothing to do with securing funding or making a name for yourself. I mean come on why are you even wasting your time. Its obvious to anyone educated that mankind is going to extinguish itself. You don’t have the power or voice to reach and change enough minds to change anything. Maybe if your mother had you immaculately and you walked on the water while spouting off about over population.

You don’t and never will, call me a pessimist but its the obvious truth. We will nuke, poison and extinguish all life on this planet but its a movie that keeps playing. life will return in whatever form it does and on and on and on.

Hows the 1 child policy in china working out, really well huh? The mothers posted next to their aborted babies is as graceful as it gets.

“Should We Humans Feel Guilty For Overpopulating This Planet?”

Not at all. Seeing as global populations are falling all over the world.

      http://www.slate.com/articles/technology/future_tense/2013/01/world_population_may_actually_start_declining_not_exploding.html

On this interactive map, bear in mind the birth rate has to be 2.4 to maintain a stable population.

      http://www.prb.org/Publications/Datasheets/2012/world-population-data-sheet/world-map.aspx#/map/population

      • Frosty Wooldridge

        Pix,
Unfortunately, global populations continue to rise by 80 million annually on our way from 7.1 billion to to 10.1 billion by 2050–a scant 37 years from now. The United States is on course to add 137 million by 2050. While fertility may be falling a small bit, the overall growth of humanity continues to overrun and overwhelm the carrying capacity of of this planet. We are doing major damage to the climate systems, fisheries, acidification of oceans and species extinction. So yes, we should not only feel guilty, but we must bring our numbers into balance with the planet’s ability to feed us. At this time, we most certainly are not and we are in trouble. FW

      Can you define overpopulation?

What is overpopulation? I see a huge amount of dolphins 7 X 5 miles wide. Is that overpopulation?
The other day it was masses of penguins or land. Is that overpopulation.

I see condensed cities like NY. Is that overpopulation?

What the heck is overpopulation? Please don’t confuse it with CONDENSED POPULATION!!!

      • Frosty Wooldridge

Anon: no way to help someone like you who cannot comprehend the obvious. FW

      • Frosty Wooldridge

Anon: As a U.S. senator said, “In America, you have the right to remain stupid.” You fit that like a glove.

        • Anonymous

Still no definition! If we can’t define the meaning we don’t know what the problem is as your two answers show.

Can we even define what overpopulation is??? We can’t because it doesn’t exist. Only condensed population exist!!!

Someone said if we were to stick everyone shoulder to shoulder they would fill only the state of Texas. That’s all!!!

Besides we are told to “be fruitful and multiply”. So what the heck is overpopulation? Bicycling with 3 guys? Maybe 4?

      • Frosty Wooldridge

Anon: The definition of an idiot or an example makes you the perfect definition. FW

    • Einner

Excuse me but our anon friend is correct and I’m afraid that you are revealing yourself to be a buffoon mr frosty.

Take seven billion people, put them into groups of four and give them a quarter acre each. You will find the actual space taken up is just over half the size of Greenland.

Also your title- its poor writing in general but the title is loaded! Should I feel guilty? I don’t know- but I do know you just presupposed an outright lie.

When the anon chap pointed it out you attacked him for his intelligence! This is poor, you should either fully research something your going to write about, are you getting paid to put this “content” in front of me then? Why the bias?
