Was a giant 700-pound snake recently killed in Proctor, North Carolina? Two photographs showing what appear to be absolutely enormous snakes are currently going viral — both images feature captions stating that the snakes in question are: over 700 lbs, 98 feet long, man-killers, found in North Carolina, found in Indonesia, etc. Are any of these things true?

In the article below I’ll go over the facts with regards to these photos, and also provide some general information on snakes — including providing information on the maximum sizes that snakes can reach.

With regards to the image posted above, the caption that generally accompanies it states that the snake in question was found in a lake in Proctor, North Carolina, before being killed and pulled from there by an excavation machine. The snake is generally described as being somewhere around 46 to 98 feet long. There are some clear issues with those numbers though — there are no snake species (currently in the world) that grow to anywhere near those lengths, and perhaps more importantly, the snake in the photo is much closer to the camera than any of the other objects in the photo are, thus giving an exaggerated sense of size.

It is clear though that even with exaggeration, that is a very large snake. Something to note — the largest snake specimen ever reported (reputably) was a 32-foot-long reticulated python (Python reticulatus) that was caught in Indonesia in the early 1900s. It is likely possible that they could grow larger, but those would be truly exceptional individuals, and even then they wouldn’t approach the sizes that the above snake is described as being.

The viral photos appear to have originated as part of an Indonesian news article published in late 2012. That article stated that the python was discovered in Indonesia, in the Bangka Belitung Islands province, before being killed and buried.

The species in question — the reticulated python — generally “only” grow to sizes of around 20 or so feet, though larger individuals are certainly known to exist. But it is unlikely that even very exceptional individuals could grow to sizes of over 3-4 times what is considered to be normal in the species. With regards to the recent photos — my guess is that those snakes were probably somewhere around 25-30 feet long.

As a side note — the largest snake species to ever exist on the Earth, as far as we know currently, was the titanoboa, which lived somewhere around 58-60 million years ago. Titanoboa cerrejonensis is estimated to have regularly reached sizes of 40-50 feet long and 2000-2500 lbs. It’s thought that the warmer climate at the time may have been part of what allowed the species to reach such gigantic sizes. The species arose shortly after the End-Cretaceous extinction event though, so the loss of large dinosaur competitors may have had something to do with it as well.

And now, in closing, some facts about the reticulated python:

- They are no venomous constrictors — they kill via constrictions .

- They are very good swimmers, and have established populations on many relatively remote islands within their range. Fishermen often report seeing them very far from land, and apparently completely at ease in the ocean.

- Until relatively recently the snake was much more common, but their numbers have been falling in recent years.

- They are primarily ambush hunters.

- Attacks on humans are rare, but they do occur.

- “In 1932, Frank Buck wrote about a teenage boy who was eaten by a pet 25-foot-long reticulated python in the Philippines. According to Buck, the python escaped, and when it was found, a human child’s shape was recognized inside the snake. It turned out to be the son of the snake’s owner.” (Story via Wikipedia)

It seems that if its on the Internet, its probably fake. Or some type of strange holographic, for lack of a better word..demonic and is advanced deception for directed the masses in a subtle often indirect way. Worse yet, we do not know or understand our adversary and most are too distracted, dumbed down or unwilling to compromise their current accepted life paradigm to even consider the idea of advanced deception on stories that “seem to have no real reason to be faked”. (Except for maybe buttering you up w/ such stories of insignificance, analyzing your reactions to such random insignificant phony stories, to effectively make adjustments where needed so that fraudulent reports on events of great significance can have more success in completely deceiving you). Sadly, I fear this has been the case for quite some time and it seems the vast majority of people simply cannot, will not, or do not think they have reason to, discern between truthful reporting on actual events transpiring today and the completely fabricated, holographic deception that people waste countless hours arguing the details on every day… yet in actuality, no one is the wiser when they argue the details about something, that in reality, never truley took place and was totally fabricated. Of course, pictures are included to make believe… After all, seeing is believing right? If you have any sense left, you may want to start considering that there may be something to those poor quality pics and videos in this day&age of 5megapix phone cameras. Start wondering about why those people have visual “trails” when they move on the news clip of a “shooting”. Things are not what they seem, but they never really ever had been…

        100% Correct. well said!

So true. Amazing the things people don’t question anymore…

    • Hang all drunkdrivers

A 98 foot snake with an average width of one foot ( a skinny snake) would have a volume of 75 cubic feet and thus weigh over 4000 pounds.

I like your thinking. We all used to able to think like that…..!!! Lol.

      • Dustdevil

Good basic physics! I caught the lie on that first one for two reasons, no real python has been found over 30-feet, and anything that broke out of the upper limit by more than a few feet would have made MSM (they’re dying for stories right now, anyhow).

That, and you can’t see the point where the loader is holding the snake, but that snake in pic 1 is VERY MUCH alive still. My guess is, someone took their pet snake, held him up at arm’s length, and took a pic of dad’s backhoe and their snake at the same time. It’s nothing but a trick of distance (like the old ‘I crush your head’ game, where you hold your fingers up and pretend to crush the head of another at a distance, due to the extreme difference between two focal lengths).

Oh, well. Decent try. And yes, the snake in pic 2 is dead, and probably close to 28-feet or so.

No sir, if you don’t understand the above comment, you are a douche. If the opening sentence got your knickers in a twist because you think the internet was being attacked as a source of truth, you should re read it until it sinks in.

3 times in a row, slowly and measured is a good tip….

    • tonyw

going n the size of the excavator the bucket may be as wide as 600mm roughly measuring this around the snake gives this 18 – 20 ft. a big snake but only a baby eater

      • Who dat

Couldn’t be arsed to move two buttons to the right and two up to add an ‘o’ in ‘on’ and that full stop and caps button, why do they have to be so far away?

    • Anonymous Patriot

The snake in the first image is a Bermese Python… they’re generally thicker than the reticulated python but don’t grow as long. A well-fed and very old Bermese Python may approach 1000 lbs but couldn’t be more than 25-30 feet in length.

      • DennisB

I hear they taste like chicken.

    • TurtleCreeWoman

I am no judge on how big these snakes can get, It may be that NC like some other states are getting over run with wild hogs or Ferrel pigs. They would be good eating for these larger snakes.

    • Anonymous

It’s fake or it would be national news.

They`re was one in Saigon zoo in 66 that was 36 ft. Burmese python!

      wasn’t hard to find….

    • Jmantaylor

Gonna have to call BS on this one based on the high altitude and cold winters there.

    • thunderstone

Straight talk here. Copy the images out and zoom in to the pixels and you will see the obvious (amateur) cut and paste hack job. These are both fake pictures and very poorly done. The bucket on the lower pic is the size of the entire track hoe (physics anyone ?) and the other one has the snakes head pasted on with a vertical line that stretches up to the top of the picture.

      This is a hoax … guaranteed !!

      Cheers

    • Rhonda

A GIANT snake in North Carolina, huh? Must be a republican…………….

    • Mike

That thing is not anywhere near 50 feet in length. Try 30 feet max.

    • DANDS

How do we “know” wheather this story is fake or not? And WHY do we give internet stories so LITTLE credibility? Were you there at the local (or otherwise “news” site? Can you personally believe everything you see on television because it came from “the news”? Don’t you know that “news” organizations have agendas also and try to warp people’s views on issues depending on the station owner’s point of view? I’m saying whether or not you see it on the “blessed” tv or on the internet…….unless YOU were there take it “with a grain of salt”. Don’t believe everything you read, hear, or sometimes see. How do you know that I’m not some kid pushing my own personal agenda against news stations?

    • stompykitty

The 1st top photo IS a retic & it’s not dead LOL! 2nd one below IS a Burm & it is dead.
The rest of the story, mute point.

    • MSG Chicken

They can snap your bones while crushing you you will hear the snap crackle and pop. Sort of like when the liar oBama, Valerie, and Hairy Weed all speak at the same time.

    • Central Scrutinizer

So you did the math to show it’s fake, but didn’t notice one excavator is yellow and the “other” is green. Obviously not the same snake, same picture, or even the same hoax.

You have way too much time on your hands to delve into the physics behind it……

    • Sisyphus

Obvious scam job, the author must be testing people for deficits in skepticism and critical thinking skills.

Two photos with the top of each similarly cut-off to prevent showing the person holding the snake up in front of the camera.

    • MissingRonnieR

Old stoey. Old fake. Thank you Photoshop.

    • stripedhorse

snopes or if you’re feeling competent, an image search will show how old this weak hoax really is.

    • HotFish

      Iphone 6 camera?

      • No time

What next? A 500 lb. mouse?

    • stripedhorse

Is this whole site and all the stories here as FAKE as this BS?
Looks like it when this story keeps getting reposted

    • the other

i saw this 2 years ago, and it’s still fake

    • Jeffery Pritchett

Fake bullshit, fuck off and die.
