July 7, 2013 – Vogtle 3 & 4 power plants in Georgia will cost $14 billion to construct. The bet is that they will be cheaper than new natural gas plants. They are the first nuclear power plants to be built in the USA in 30 years. And they are supposed to be safer than older designs. Will Unit 3 be complete on its scheduled completion date in 2017? Will it come in on budget? Here’s a hint: When Vogtle 1 & 2 were proposed in 1971 the budget was $600 million; when they were completed in 1987 & 1989 the cost was $8.87 billion. The rest of the industry is watching this very closely to see how the construction and budgeting works out. Please leave your comments here.
