Albert Einstein was one of the world’s greatest thinkers and some have compared his general outlook on life to the Buddha’s. Ahimsa, or the principle of not injuring life forms, seems to apply to Einstein’s great sense of wonder and appreciation for all the phenomena of life. Below are some quotes attributed to him on the natural world.

“Nothing will benefit human health and increase the chances for survival of life on earth as much as the evolution to a vegetarian diet.”

“Our task must be to free ourselves…by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature and its beauty.”

“The environment is everything that isn’t me.”

(Source: Boston Vegetarian Society)

“Problems cannot be solved at the same level of awareness that created them.”

“We shall need a substantially new way of thinking if humanity is to survive.”

(Source: Sustainable Baby Steps)

Now, Einstein was not an environmental activist in the manner of activism today, such as the campaigning that groups like Green Peace and the Sierra Club do. David Suzuki and Julia Butterfly are personalities in the ecology sphere who are listened to sometimes by the mainstream press and even the public, but Albert Einstein was iconic. His name and photograph are associated with genius level thinking in science, so his image is that of one of the most intelligent humans in modern history.

So when he spoke or wrote, his words were often regarded with a high respect, if not a reverence. Even today, his quotes may be captivating for a number of readers. How long this regard will last is hard to say. Successive generations may not pay him much attention, but who will stand out as an iconic genius to the extent that anyone around the world might listen to her or his insights?

If Einstein was alive today, he probably would have huge followings on Twitter, Face Book and Google+. His shares alone would likely influence millions of people, and undoubtedly his voice would be listened to on matters such as climate change, vegetarianism, renewable energy and alternative transportation. The world might be different simply because of his presence.
