What’s happening this Go Green Week?

Next week thousands of students across the country will be taking action on climate change as part of Go Green Week (10-16th February)

This year, as Go Green Week coincides with Valentine’s Day, we’re calling on our colleges, universities and politicians to dump the fossil fuel industry. Throughout the week students will be organising film screenings, stunts and debates whilst signing Fossil Free Valentine’s day action cards, which will be delivered in a coordinated mass action on Fossil Free Friday.

There are hundreds of great activities already planned, with over 30 groups taking action for Fossil Free. Here are just a few highlights;

On Monday The University of Warwick group will be waiting patiently to hear the result of their all student referendum on whether their Student’s Union should support the campaign.

On Wednesday Fossil Free Hull fossil free group are organising a Fossil Free sit in outside their library whilst the Fossil Free Glasgow group will be deliver their petition to the University Court as they sit to discuss fossil fuel divestment.

And on Friday groups including Manchester, Swansea and Birmingham will be handing over their petitions to their Vice Chancellor, asking them to review their investments in the fossil fuel industry.

The fossil fuel industry is driving us towards catastrophic climate change. They hold 5 times more oil, coal and gas in their reserves than we can safely burn to stay below a 2 degree rise, and they’re planning on using it.

UK Universities currently invest £5.2bn into this industry, meanwhile politicians are bank rolling their campaigns with dirty coal, oil and gas money. Universities and politicians have made a commitment to averting climate change. This Go Green Week it’s time for them to live up to these commitments.
