To make the assertion that scientists are 97% in agreement that climate change is caused by humans and needs to be addressed, Oliver (and many others) cite Zimmerman’s study on scientific consensus. That study asked to questions 1) whether the Earth was warming and 2) whether human activity played a significant role. Out of more than 10,000 surveys mail, about 3,000 responded. Of those 3,000 only 77 where considered currently publishing climate scientists (97% of those where from North America). So, when they say 97% of scientists agree, they really mean that 75 out of 77 (mostly American) scientists self identifying as climate scientists and currently publishing, agree that the earth is warming and man plays a significant role.
