A ruptured pipeline has spilled as much as 50,000 gallons of oil in Montana on Jan 17, with an unknown amount seeping into the Yellowstone River.

The breach occurred in the Poplar Pipeline system, 9 miles upstream from Glendive in eastern Montana.

According to Bridger Pipeline, the oil leaked out for about one hour. The cause has yet to be determined.

Company spokesman Bill Salvin told AP “Oil has made it into the river,” Salvin said, according to AP. “We do not know how much at this point.”

Some locals say they can smell and taste oil in their drinking water.

“I am not saying the water is unsafe. I am not saying it is safe. We are waiting for officials to arrive who can make that decision,” said Mary Jo Gehnert, coordinator of the Dawson County Disaster and Emergency Services, according to KRTV.

State officials were optimistic damage would be minimal, given parts of the river are covered with ice.

The Poplar Pipeline connects from Baker, Montana to Canada, and is buried eight feet below the Yellowstone River at Glendive, where the leak occurred.

Four years ago a spill by ExxonMobil Corp of 63,000 gallons into the Yellowstone River has cost them $135 million in cleanup costs, and is still ongoing.

These burst pipelines can have a huge impact on the environment, causing catastrophic consequences for animals, insects and plants.

if the government would stop stealing and hiding alternative energy inventions we wouldn’t need oil.

but then who would make money off oil.

You have no real emotions do you?

You cannot see that it truely is horrible that this spill took place. Nor, do you have enough humour in you to appreciate a joke.

You are a sad little child.

        • Piggy Christian

          Why, Cow Pie.
Cannot you see that I am Mann god is just “worshiping” WITH Preyer the Caucasian KILLER mangod??

        • CrowPie

Your both ignorant hypocrites. The oil you so despise is used to create plastic. That plastic is used to create the casing for the computer, and the electrical lines for power companies to keep the electricity on …so that you may use that computer.

Sit down and rethink your position.

        • Piggy Christian

          NO, FOOL!
You sit down and rethink YOUR Lack of a Position!
THE OIL AND GAS products make up over 90% of what is SOLD to a fool like YOU, cow plop!
ALL OF THE PLASTIC can be made from HEMP and other plant materials.
          PERIOD!
But, your very all male run “country” has made HEMP illegal (all male christOIDS of the 1930’s made these Federal laws)!

ALSO, every single diesel engine CAN run on Hempseed oil!
          If, it was legal.

So, go shove your head back up your Patriotic” arse hole, Cow Plop, and read your all MALE wrote “Book of Babbling Insanities” that resides there all of the time.
And, where you spend most of your life.

      • BEEFUS SUPREME

        CrowPie,
Yes, this Post does describe ANOTHER Horrible Oil disaster!
        Very true.
BUT, what is truly horrible is people like you, CrowPie, that recognize the environmental damage being done, will just “mindlessly” go out today and……………………. WILL FILL “THEIR” CAR WITH………………………………OIL AND OIL PRODUCTS!

CrowPie, “crocodile tears” MEAN NOTHING at all.
        Enough of “your” TALK!!
        STOP BUYING GAS!

Ongoing is another massive killing of fish and wildlife and detrimental health effects on countless people, pets, birds…
Brought to you by Exxon, who have shown from the last spill in the same river, that the management just doesn’t care a lot, but for their corporate profits and the loss of their oil.

Executive order to oil workers …”You are working overtime to clean this up.”
      Workers-”Yeah, yippee, this is great!”
Government to CEO…”Were going to fine you a days profit.”
CEO to government…”We will fight this.”

Niger Delta ExxonMobil Spill, Nigeria – May 2010
In Nigeria’s Akwa Ibom State, an ExxonMobil pipeline ruptured on May 1 and spilled over a million gallons of oil, reported the Guardian. The leak continued for seven days before it was stopped.

Yellowstone River Spill, Montana – July 2011
In July 2011, a pipeline beneath Montana’s Yellowstone River ruptured and sent an oil plume 25 miles downstream, reported AP.
Despite reassurances from ExxonMobil that the pipeline was safe, the July spill released what was originally estimated to be 42,000 gallons of oil. With other 1,000 workers assisting the cleanup, ExxonMobil estimated that it would cost $135 million to clean the river.
