We’ve come a long way since candle lit rooms and bathing in large metal tubs of boiled water, and while light bulbs and running hot water might have seemed like sorcery to our ancestors, we are now looking to even more advanced ways of living. In the modern era, there is a greater emphasis on convenience than necessity. Perhaps due to the busy and fast paced nature of the times, this has led to technology being applied to the automation of the home – making as many things as possible usable at the flick of a switch or even at a set time each day. Below are five new technologies that can bring your home forward into and beyond the 21st century, as well as improving your home life.

1. Video Doorbell: using the internet, you can now purchase a doorbell with an inbuilt HD camera which you can view the feed of via your phone. This means that you can stop needlessly answering the door to sales calls or other unwanted visitors. These doorbells are also fitted with a microphone and speaker so that you can communicate with the person on your doorstep, even if you’re miles away!

2. Motion Sensor Kitchen Bin: with sensors that react to movement over the lid, this kitchen bin could make cross contamination a thing of the past. Sensors are also built into the bottom so that the lid can be lifted with a wave of the foot as well. These motion sensors are also being taken into the smart cities of the future and will be attached to street lights, dimming and brightening according to stimuli around them, saving a surprising amount of energy.

3. Self-Dimming Light Bulbs: moving on from the previously mentioned candle lit rooms, you can now recreate the ambiance of warm candle light with self-dimming bulbs without the fire hazard. Functioning normally until their switch is flicked twice in quick succession, these bulbs will slowly dim over the course of forty or so minutes before completely shutting off, lulling you to sleep. Another beneficial feature, is that the warm light produced by these bulbs induces the production of melatonin in the body, the hormone that regulates day and night cycles, bettering your sleep.

4. Camouflage TV Screens: this is one new feature of modern televisions that is perfect for people who take time and pride in their home decor. Regardless of how well you paint or wallpaper your living room, there’s always going to be a rectangular ugly screen mounted on the wall (unless you one built into your home). However, with camouflage screens, you can now have the pattern of your wall set as your TV’s standby screen, blending it into your home effortlessly.

5. Robot Lawn Mower: if you’ve heard of the Roomba (a small machine that glides around your home hoovering up debris) then you’ll love this. This automatic lawn mower will fix up your lawn, using shock sensors to avoid obstacles and even has the ability to detect rain and return to its base.
