A letter to my Golden, Colorado City Council: We can't keep doing this to ourselves

 

A letter to my Golden, Colorado City Council:

 

Each time the Golden City Council votes in favor of more buildings, I feel a great deal of anguish for future generations. The Bell Policy population projections for Colorado show that we will jump from 5.7 million people to 8.7 million people within the next 28 years.

That’s 3,000,000 “resource competitors” added to this state that will need water. How much water? The average Coloradan uses 80 gallons of water to shower, shave, flush the toilet, sprinkle the lawn, wash clothes, and more water-using activities during a 24 hour period.

 

Therefore, let’s multiply 3,000,000 X’s 80 to total 30 million gallons more on top of the 456 million gallons that our current population uses each day. When you start adding up the amount of water that it’s going to take to sustain another 3 million people, folks, we’ve got an enormous problem facing every citizen of Colorado.

At some point, when you turn your tap on, there won’t be any water. Is there any chance that the Golden City Council might choose another path toward sustainability for future generations? Let’s become the first “Golden Stop Growth Policy” in Colorado. Let’s choose sustainability and viability over the insanity of perpetual growth.
