Irish Leaders In Remembrance First

The Taoiseach has laid a wreath at a remembrance service in Northern Ireland in a historic first.

Enda Kenny attended commemorations in Enniskillen, Co Fermanagh, as the town marked 25 years since the IRA Poppy Day bomb – an attack that claimed 12 lives.

The symbolic visit, which saw Mr Kenny lay a laurel wreath at the town’s war memorial, came as Tanaiste Eamon Gilmore joined dignitaries at a service in Belfast.

The sight of Dublin’s two most senior government ministers at remembrance events in Northern Ireland marks another milestone in improving cross-border relations.

It also represents further proof of a growing acknowledgement in the Republic of Ireland of the sacrifice of Irishmen from across the island, pre-partition, during the First World War.

Accompanied by an aide de camp from the Irish Defence Forces, Mr Kenny bowed his head during a two minute silence at a commemoration attended by hundreds.

Survivors of the 1987 terrorist attack were among the crowds standing only yards from where the bomb exploded.

After the event, Mr Kenny attended a church service at St Macartin’s cathedral in the town.

Mr Gilmore was joined by Northern Ireland First Minister Peter Robinson, UK Secretary of State Theresa Villiers and Lord Mayor Gavin Robinson at the cenotaph in Belfast.
