Terminal cancer patients now expected to attend work interviews or lose welfare support

“I have terminal cancer, my prognosis is 0-3 years and I was diagnosed in March 2014 with my brain stem glioma. In April 2014 I was placed in the support group* for 3 years and I have gone from being able-bodied to hopelessly disabled. I have many neurological deficits including diploplia, dyspraxia, dysarthria and dysphagia. To save you googling, this means that I have double vision and am going blind, I’m very clumsy and most days I drop everything I pick up, my speech is failing and one day I won’t be able to communicate verbally at all and I have such difficulty swallowing that I now have a feeding tube. I cannot leave the house alone and I’m at risk of choking and need 24 hour care. They speak of me going into residential care, but they hope to keep me in my own home for as long as possible. The trouble is degenerative, nothing will get better, only worse, the cancer can’t be cured. I’m 37.
Now. I can deal with all that. I’m alive! And I can still do stuff!! What I cannot deal with is that I am on the work programme! I received this letter today (too late to ring the WP) demanding I attend an appointment with the Work Programme on Tuesday or they’ll stop my benefits. HOW SICK DOES A PERSON HAVE TO BE BEFORE THE HARASSMENT STOPS?”
* The support group is supposed to be for claimants who the DWP consider to have such severe health problems that there is no current prospect of their being able to undertake work or work-related activities.

I am so sorry for what you are going through babe and wish there was something I personally could do to help. There is one thing I can do, it will not cover you short term but it will in the long run. First contact EDD and apply for State Disability Insurance. This is the equivalent to unemployment insurance for those to sick or injured to work and it pays a bit more. Every state has a version of the program as it is a unified federal/state program. If you haven’t yet immediately apply for Social Security benefits. The cancer diagnosis usually helps the wheels turn a little faster than normal. Don’t get discouraged I’ve seen approvals in months verses years otherwise.
The healthcare system understands that the economic situation is bleak and the political system is about to crash. When it does, who are you going to call? How could you possibly sue them or hold them responsible in any way. It will not be possible. Even if you were successful suing the healthcare provider the maximum award you receive will probably never exceed the amount of the pagan life insurance policy the insurers obtain using a portion of your premium and naming them as the beneficiary.
In case you were not aware, the truth is that doctors are the third leading cause of premature death in the United States of America. It is no different today than it was back in 1927 with the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Anthropology, Human Heredity, and Eugenics in Berlin. They have no compassion or empathy for human life or suffering, well unless their measly behinds are the ones doing the agonizing. Ask any nurse doctors are the worst patients, even though while you’re suffering doctors minimize your pain, when they experience it they whine like little sissies demanding adequate relief.
Anyway back to the subject; Public assistance is supposed to be temporary, not an extended source of income. Like with unemployment insurance most states throughout the nation require you to be actively searching for work or participating in vocational training. I suspect dear that this is where your problem is. You may be on the wrong form of public assistance. Talk to your worker they might be able to provide assistance or refer you to someone who can help with obtaining and filling out required forms.
I know it’s not much, but hope this helps a little. Dear I truly know how difficult your struggle is just being ill. It really sucks when a whole bunch of misery converges on you at once. It becomes overwhelming. Don’t loose hope. I will keep you in my prayers.
