BBC’s Referendum Coverage Is Biased Says Watchdog

The BBC’s coverage of the forthcoming EU referendum continues to be weighted in favour of the Remain campaign, it was claimed yesterday.

Although the alleged bias has become less marked in recent weeks, broadcasting watchdog News-watch said the Corporation was still favouring the In vote.

The organisation said there had been an improvement and some balanced reporting, but the overall trend from the Corporation was still in favour of Remain.

A spokesman said: “In 17 years of monitoring BBC output, we have yet to find a programme that has been biased in favour of Brexit.

“We are not suggesting that such a programme should be aired.

“But there is still a long way to go before balance is achieved in this referendum campaign.

“The BBC has yet to accept that Brexit is mainstream, respectable and of significant public interest.”

Last night, a BBC spokeswoman denied the claims of bias.

She said: “We don’t accept this so-called analysis, which comes from a group with a clear agenda.

“Much of it is rehashed, where they have deliberately looked at programmes from only select dates and in such a way as to provide an unfair and unrepresentative picture of the BBC’s referendum coverage.

“The BBC provides clear and impartial information about the different sides of the argument and will ensure that its coverage is balanced across the duration of the campaign.”

Then how do you explain this evening’s (22 June) BBC 6 o’clock news announcing “That both sides of the campaign were out today campaigning up and down the country.”

Giving Mr Cameron’s final speech lasting eleven minutes, while giving the leave campaign no coverage at all.

Of course, I expect nothing less from the Brussels Broadcasting Corporation but feel the British people deserve a whole lot better than this.
