Eat Fresher Food By Growing Your Own Organic Garden

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

One of the smartest things you can do for you and your diet is to start an organic garden. For best results, however, you need to put in the right amount of effort. You probably have many questions about how to accomplish your gardening goals.

When you are cultivating an organic garden inside, you should think about the lighting situation. If your home does not let in sufficient light, then consider getting plants that thrive in low-light situations. You could also consider using grow-lights for this exact purpose.

Prepare the ground for a perennial garden quickly and easily. You just need to use your garden spade for slicing underneath the turf, then flip it, and finally spread about three or four inch deep piles of wood chips. Let the area sit for a fortnight, then turn the earth and set up your new perennial bed.

When you are growing organic plants within the home or an enclosed area, considering how much light the plants will receive must be emphasized. If you live in a home or apartment that does not get great sunlight you may want to consider growing plants that are designed to grow in low or medium-light environments. If this is not an option, or you have your heart set on a particular type of plant, consider adding additional growing lights instead.

Plastic bags can be kept on hand and reused to slip over your dirty gardening shoes. This keeps your flow going, so you can get back out to the garden quickly and finish your work.

Coffee Grounds

Coffee grounds are a good addition to your soil. Coffee beans are loaded with nitrogen, which offers nourishment for plants. Generally, nitrogen is the limiting nutrient with any plant and having a good nitrogen source either by coffee grounds, compost, or even diluted urea, will make your plants bloom faster and grow taller.

Have some plastic bags on hand that you can put over your gardening shoes if they are muddy. This allows you to keep going, getting back to your garden quickly.

Leave plenty of growing space when you plant your garden. You can underestimate how much space you need when they are growing. The plants need space due to sheer size and also for air circulation. Make sure that you map out your garden layout beforehand and place your seeds with an adequate amount of space in between each.

Would you like to kill those obnoxious weeds naturally? Use a lot of layers of newspaper in order to achieve weed control. Without exposure to the sun, weeds cannot thrive. By placing newspaper over them, they will not get light and suffocate. In time, the newspaper will decompose into the soil. To improve the appearance of newspaper, simply spread a bit of mulch over it.

When you plant the seeds in containers, be sure the planting’s depth is three times bigger than the seed. There are exceptions to this rule though, as some seeds need direct sunlight to grow. Example of these kinds of seeds include the petunia and the ageratum. If you are unsure about the specific needs of your seeds, you should consult your local garden center or conduct further research online. Important things to look for include water requirements, ideal soil type, and recommended sunlight exposure.

Try to avoid letting your organic garden chores build up. Even doing just a few small things each day can keep chores from piling up and eventually becoming unmanageable. This will save you a lot of time in the long run. Try pulling a few weeds from the garden while your dogs are out doing their business.

It is a great idea to help your garden by ruffling seedlings, either with cardboard or with your own hands, a couple of times each day. This will sound a bit strange. However, it has been proven to cause plants to grow larger.

The simple beer trap is still one of the best methods of ridding your organic garden of slugs. Take a glass jar and bury it so that the soil is even with its mouth. Fill that with beer just under an inch from the top of your jar. Beer attracts slugs and then they’ll get stuck in the jar.

Organic Gardening

When it is harvest time, use a laundry basket. Laundry baskets which have holes in them act as giant strainers for your home grown produce. Rinse the product off whilst it’s in the basket so that any extra water can strain through the laundry basket’s holes.

As this article has shown, to be successful at organic gardening you must do your homework and put forth a bit of effort. It is also true that in order to see results, that you have to keep at it. Hopefully this article has you well prepared for your endeavor into the relaxing and productive world of organic gardening.
